If you're still a relatively new employee you probably won't be able to make a compelling case for a promotion. However, you could still express your interest in moving up. There's nothing wrong with alluding to your ambition, but trying to push it too far might not be well received.
Yeah, trying to find a tactful way to bring it up without sounding money hungry.
I’ve been at the company for 3 years. My peers in this new role (and my last) are all directors. I’m now Sr. Mgr level (but IC, so less ICP).
Also the only female on my past two teams.. fwiw
Do you have evidence that this was two levels below what you were offered? How do you protect yourself from that not happening?
@E1, I wish I could say that this isn’t something I’ve seen before. I think it’s not uncommon in corporate companies, but I could be wrong.
Jus be honest
It doesn’t hurt to ask but ideally you should have asked when you received the offer and accepted.
Could have been a mistake or maybe people in the role are at different levels based on experience and your peers have been in the role longer. You are within your right to ask but just know there may be a valid reason and not automatically think bait and switch.
Agreed, good feedback. There are also other ways to compensate beyond just a promotion… RSUs, higher bonus %, % increase in pay, etc.
I think I am a little confused, so did you know they were hiring you for two levels below what was posted? Either way, I definitely think asking about the promotion is a good idea. I would just be honest and explain the situation to your manager and ask what you need to do to get the promotion.
My previous role was two levels below, they lowered it by one level so I didn’t skip that level.
What does it mean that the lowered the job level when you got the offer?
It means the original posting was for ~director level and they made me an offer at ~Sr. Mgr level because in the system I was at Mgr level and they didn’t want to skip sr. Mgr level, even though the job is the same.
