I was placed on a PIP last week, and it’s messing with my head. I’m second guessing my every move, and am on edge when my manager comes around. I can’t afford to lose my job right now. I have to survive this PIP, but how do I do that? I didn’t know my performance was subpar, and now my manager is being cold and barely acknowledges me. I have two months to save my butt. What should I be doing?

Definitely use this time to look for a new job.

You're already done there. PIPs aren't anything more than a "paid interview period" that companies use to have a paper trail so they can fire you without complications. Start looking for a new job ASAP

PLEASE NOTE: you have the right to request a full copy of your personnel file, even after you are laid off or terminated. Just by requesting it, you are communicating to HR that you are aware of your rights, and you will advocate on your own behalf. I've seen this benefit folks more than once...think of it as a way to preempt any heavy-handed moves that HR might have in mind to prevent unemployment benefits from being awarded, etc. On a separate note, you might also benefit from doing a consultation with an attorney who specializes in labor law, as they typically work on contingency basis...so if they don't take your case, you still benefit from the information they might share.

So very sorry they are doing this to you in the manner they are handling it.

Plenty of people have gone through this, and my sense is that very few survive.

Two months is not enough time to “fix” anything, unless (and this is very unlikely) the PIP addresses primarily mechanical things that are readily fixable.

The more unclear the PIP is, the more likely they are trying to get rid of you. You don’t have a good relationship with your boss, and that’s generally the kiss of death regarding a PIP.

HR can’t help you, so don’t expect them to be your ally. They are there to support management, not the rank and file.

Best is to immediately start looking for a new job.

Don’t quit without a new job. Make them fire you. If you quit you aren’t eligible for UC. Also, if you quit you won’t receive severance pay.

Try to use this situation as a learning opportunity. That will help you to stay focused. You will come out of this landing on your feet if you do the best job you can working your way through things.

Best wishes moving forward!

It's called quiet firing. Look for bridge jobs and keep looking. They will make it as difficult as possible

I’ve had team members actually improve after being put on a PIP and gotten through to the other side.

The fact your manager is being detached is a bad sign for you but given their behavior how badly do you want to work there?

like

do not jump through hoops....theyre using this threat to get you to get more done out of fear, but will let you go regardless.....do not bust your butt for them....get something better

like

You should have given verbal and written warning before placed on PIP. If that did not happen and will be let go, there's grounds for suing the company. I was never put on PIP, but I was " pushed out" from 2 consecutive jobs. That really shattered my confidence. Counselling helped me a lot; I only n eeded 3 sessions. I learned how to look for the job I want and I succeeded. I am working with this company for 11 years now and I am appreciated and respected and worked my way up to a management position. What I am trying to say, is that sometimes we dont even realize the toxic environment we're working in becaue the fear takes over. Good luck!

Hey man - take it from me, I've seen two people with PIPs previously, both continued to pass it, and stay on within the team. Sometimes, it is about also showing resilience, documenting solid feedback from people, being proactive, receptive to feedback and trying to show that improvement immediately or as quick as possible. It is the small wins. It is about documenting feedback. It is about perseverance. I would also look for a job, but try my best to excel there - for your own morale as well! Quit thinking about what your manager thinks of you, think about what you want them to see over the 4-6 weeks of your PIP. There is light at the end of the tunnel, just don't lose hope. Good luck pal :) .

like

You can’t recover from a PIP at CR. It’s forever a stain. Start looking.

like

How long have you been there? Do you or a family member on your insurance have developed costly medical expenses recently? If so, your employees broker is pressuring them to get rid of you.
Whatever the reason they put you on a PIP may be, talk to a lawyer. Get a small notebook and document everything you do. If they know that terminating you is going to cost them legal fees, they may give you severance on the condition that you waive taking legal action.

like

They're usually bogus if you're doing a good job and have good appraisals.

That said, they are stretching you out for work needed from you. The PIP is to cover their butts when they tell you you're no longer needed.

Sorry to be so negative but this is what happens, so you better start looking elsewhere. Good luck!

like

Don't bother. Your manager could be happy with improvement, but their boss could be the one making the decision

Surprised they have not given you proper feedback. I have put my juniors in past organizations on PIP in past but it would be post giving atleast 6 months of extensive monthly 1-1 feedback and I am sad to say that we have never retained ppl post on PIP. I had 1 instance in past where post giving feedback for almost a year person was taking it to casual and didn’t make any change but moment he was was PIP he completely switched. He performed professionally with minimal mistakes and he was unanimously given positive feedback by me and my peers and was put off from PIP. U need to have 1-1 meeting with your boss and ask actual feedback and work on it like your life depends on it and honestly also start looking for another job extensively as finding job is your main job.

From my experience, not many managers nor seniors understand that one of their responsibilities is mentoring. My career advisor was horrible. When I was on PiP, I was informed by HR without any heads up. I asked if there's a document or something so I know what is expected from me and how much time I had but they said there's no document and it's just verbal (my mistake for accepting that SMH) my career advisor basically shut me out and would keep cancelling my meeting requests bc she had a "911" for one of her clients or she got pulled in to help with provision... wouldn't even give me 5 mins. I had weekly 1-1 with the seniors/managers I had work with, over communicated, completed my tasks before internal deadlines, and I always made myself available over the weekend and late nights. I was given a lot of positive feedback during our performance evals so I thought I was doing okay. One month later, partner called me with HR and told me it's my last day and that they're not obligated to give me the reason. Hangs up the call, 5 mins later shut off my laptop. It's rare when you have people rooting for you... I hope this isn't the case for you and you have upper management who want you to survive. Document everything and over communicate... Make drastic changes. Or...take advantage of your health benefits before you're out of the job lol Good luck

Look for a new job and get out of there. It will be so much better for your mental well being. It does nothing but cause you to make mistakes because you are second guessing every move you make.

You're cooked.

New job - it may not be performance, could be many reasons, but not an option to debate, designed to let you go, you need a new job asap

Start looking! I am sorry to say There is no coming back from that.

Look for a new job asap.
Even if you can turn it around they will find another reason to get rid of you.

I was placed on a PIP due to a 'jealous' coworkers lies.

What should I do? People say that I'm lucky to get paid without doing any work, but it is stressing me out. I need the experience. The uncertainty is freaking me out, with rumours of layoffs and the certification program and all.

How do I get into a project? How long do I have to wait more?

Is there mass layoffs happening in the industry right now? Is the rumour true? Are we back in a recession?

Is it just me or do 90% of the jobs being laid off by big tech sound made up? Many job descriptions with multiple bullet points that all kinda revolve around the same idea. Are these kind of jobs finally being exposed? Six figure employees getting paid to sit and bounce ideas off each other?

So someone I know asked HR about a boot policy. When he found out that there wasn’t one, but his boss said there was (who gave the guys $ for boots and the claimed it on his expense reimbursements as something else) the boss got mad at him for askingHR (and in trouble for the expense reimbursements) and then 2 days later laid off my friend. There appears to be no notice of bad performance and this person always was the first person on the job site ready to work. Thoughts?

There’s no reason you have to put up with a job you hate. I spent many years working in a toxic environment with a boss who gossiped and lead through fear. He wasn’t really much of a leader but basically a foreman. And he could make my existence miserable. I admit that it wasn’t easy to find another job but the bottom line is: trust your guts. If you feel something is wrong it’s because it probably is. Don’t second guess yourself. Look for options and and fight for your mental health.
