This happened to me in April at age 63! Was numb, same thing, thought would be there until retired. Sent out many applications, resume, etc. Ended up going back to the temp agency that had gotten me the job where I was for so long and they have placed me earning more money than at the previous job. Hours are better too. And also pray.
Me too! I'm 64 in September. October would have been my 24th year with the company! I planned on working there unti retirement. Its going to be hard getting anywhere near my old salary.
There is a great career coach that I follow. One thing he covers extensively is age. I suggest checking out the video and his full library on YouTube. He has so much valuable information just sitting there, waiting to be consumed.

Friend of mine just landed a new role at 48 after being laid off. A little younger than you but not by much! She took an impressive approach by almost exclusively networking and barely sending in any "cold applications" online. So, I haven't been on the job hunt lately but what she did seemed to really work.
The job market and economy is hard on everyone no matter what your age which you might want to broaden your search just to be able to get a job, any job.
First, don't be afraid ..... Take it one day at a time. Meditate and change your scenery for a day. When you're ready build a new strategy. Talk to people who can give you good advice. You are not at an age where you could not find a contract position, even another full- time position.
It may not be as bad as you feel. You actually might be in a good place. Have Faith!
I AM GOING THROUGH THE SAME SITUATION
Start working with one of the EA search firms right away. They will have jobs you want to be considered for.
Honestly I'm tied to a number of recruiters and none of them have led to anything temporary or permanent. It is an employers market and they do not need to go through recruiters. They have so many people look and they are low balling too!
If a lot of people with experience are out of jobs and can't land one, what's the hope for entry-level people like myself, who are finding it difficult to land a role because of the same experience?
It does get harder, I’ve been out of work 2 years and I just turned 60 yrs old, UGH!

Happened to me in July…at 60 after 21 years…
Hang in there. I am 56, unemployed and looking for an EA or something similar in pay. God keeps providing for me. I work getting on CV/Resumes out on a daily basis. I am sticking to my guns as long as I can and not get the same ole toxic garbage. I keep busy getting things done that need to get done and work on learning the newest programs that I keep seeing in the position discripts.
I am also turning 49 and no job in the past 4 months. I also fear for my age. Praying that something comes up very soon.
