When you no longer feel like you’re able to grow or develop in the role you’re in; you’ve been performing well, then it’s time to level up
Not every great player in sports ends up becoming a coach after their playing days are over. Without knowing your personal situation in life outside of work, I’d still recommend maximizing your earning income for as long as you can in your prime years. Individual contributor sales is the best for that. IMO- ages 35-50 you have to crank it up with growing your income and net worth. Other people commented about “making less money” as a people manager. That is true in my case. I’m a people manager and do well, but my best 10 years by far income wise was as an IC.
Sales is sales but stepping into management you are now going to be held accountable for not just yourself but also for those you are asked to lead.
Job titles are great on a resume but in my opinion it comes down to having the skills to do the job and knowing the expectations. Are you ready to lead others? Can you teach them the processes to be successful? It's a tricky balance when you've had success because of course you want to grow and many companies promote the top sales guy because it will save them money in the long run. That's how it works in Logistics anyway.
It will be a pay cut, and you never stop working. I wake up working, I go to sleep working and have the phone glued to my ear in between. You will never get compensated as much as a sales rep. I can make in 5 months what my salary is as a manager. Sure I get overrides and I can go out to my own appts, but I’ll make 200k at best. When I was a rep I was doing 250-265k and never worked the hours I do as a manager. You will stress, your health will suck, and you will never have time to foster relationships or your current one will suffer. I’m single and all in all I’m ok with that, I thrive in stress, so it makes me more productive and all in all I do it because I love it. You are either going to love it or hate it, there is no in between. Either way good luck! And be careful what you wish for… many of us managers burn out…. Thankfully I’m one of the ones who love it.
It’s pretty simple as long as you can see the following clearly. Do you offer more value as a salesperson or a leader? Next, why don’t you ask existing sales managers to go to lunch and get their guidance in what to expect should you transition to the new role. Good luck. It’s a great problem to have.
It’s a pay cut always.
Yeah I wish that someone would have warned me about that part because I really wasn't expecting how drastic my pay cut has been. I'm making around 30k less than when I was selling which is just not what I expected when I took what I thought was a promotion. So I'd make sure to do the math and see if it would be worth it. I don't think career growth is always the most important thing
In many cases managers make less and have more responsibilities.
If you are only managing 2 or 3 reps that’s fine. Consider if you will now have to travel more. Are you good at answering for others sales performances? Can you allow others to sell without feeling need to chime in? Most great reps are terrible at managing others. I would never recommend changing jobs when you love your current job and you’re good at it. What more do you want?
I will be honest I really didn't know it was the right time but I just went for it. I didn't want to get stuck or stall my growth so when I was offerend the promotion I took it. If they think you are ready then I say go for it. You really don't have anything to lose.
I will never take a management position. If you feel you are not moving forward with your present company, you need to find a new company.
If you don't jump out of bed everyday looking forward to what you can accomplish, you need to start looking elsewhere. Set financial goals, The bigger the better. Big house, vacation home, boat, what matters to you?
When I have been asked about becoming a manager my response has always been, " My idea of management, is managing to get myself out of bed everyday!"
It's difficult to get others to be as excited about a job as you are, go do great things.
Work for a company that gets you!
You shouldn't hesitate to move into Managers' role
My advice is take the trajectory as a validation of your success as a rep.zYour time has just come to accept more responsibilities.with this you're trusted more
