I’m an investment banking summer analyst at a major bank. I have an autoimmune disease and tend to get very sick very easily, especially when working long hours. I didn’t bring this up in the interview or hiring stages because I didn’t want it to disqualify me, and I hoped it wouldn’t be an issue, but the hours are really hurting my health. What should I do? I worked hard to get where I am, so I’d like to stay in IB if I can, but my health is obviously important too. Should I talk to my manager?

Make the switch to something more sustainable. I can promise you that as a virtual intern this is the easiest that banking will be for you. There are plenty of options out there that can use your background, and having a summer analyst gig at a BB will look good on your resume. It’s scary as hell at first to make that jump, especially when it feels like you’re making the switch. But as another former intern who switched career paths I look back so happily realizing I got out when I did. I knew by week 3 that I dreaded the job physically and mentally, even though it was all I wanted to do for all 3 years of college. You’ll find something else that works, PM if you need help but your health and happiness are more important than any career

Don’t do IB. There’s stories of analysts with no pre-existing health conditions ending up in the hospital bc of the job. Even if you do take the job, the potential health effects will likely cost more than the higher salary.

Get the full time offer first, and then leverage that to get a reasonable corporate job. If you’re considering on other jobs within the firm, talk to HR after getting the offer.

Agreed. I interned 2 summers in IB and decided against it even as a healthy individual (eat clean, workout 4-5x a week).

While interning I basically chugged pre workout to get to the gym. It was like catch 22, bc I would feel worse without the workout but with the workout I was more sleep deprived😢

And in one summer I faded two foundation shades bc I didn’t see the sun working those hours

Whatever you decide to do, as a stopgap you’ve got to find a way to make your current situation more tenable. You may need to cut anything taking up your time other than work and taking care of your health. It’s not a great lifestyle, but your health is more important.

like

You are probably not the first person in IB to have a disability, in your case an autoimmune disorder. The firm is required to make reasonable accommodations but from what I’ve gathered they might not help that much in the intense IB landscape. If you really love IB and it’s your passion, go for it and you should be ok. But, if you are having doubts that’s telling me IB may not be right for you.

I’m not sure what a “summer analyst” is but assuming you’re a full-time employee (not sure if that means intern?), why not talk to HR instead of your manager? It seems if you get HR on your side first and lays out what options you have, it will be easier to navigate after that.

Summer analyst is a fancy way of saying “intern.”

Sorry OP. I’m in your shoes and dealt with some shady shit. That said: Talk to an employment lawyer in your state BEFORE you raise anything to anyone, so you have clear expectations for the process. Go through legal aid, even. I got some free consults. Since you are so early in your career, I wonder if you have even considered similar roles that are less dependent on ridiculous hours. We need a professional network for autoimmune disease sufferers, I swear. We live sort of in the shadows, even from each other. Thinking positive thoughts for you. You’re smart. You’ve made it this far with a real disadvantage. You’ve got this.

Reconsider your career. Prioritize your health over money and prestige. Anything without your health is not worth having.

You should get a new job

If you can't physically put in the hours now you definitely won't when you have an actual ib job

Curious what’s a fair salary in MA? When should a stub start getting worried about not having much work and low billable hours?
I’ve asked for work but no luck. I know they say this is normal for a stub but when should I start getting worried and consider looking for exit options? Fyi, I like my practice group, so I don’t want to change to a different group within my firm, hence would have to lateral, if I have to. Also, other co-1st years are churning in high hours.
