I'm coming to a conclusion that 40 hours/week is not a good balance. Maybe for me. I left consulting only to go back to an MSP, but I am reaching burnout again. In the last few years, I came to the conclusion that working 32 hours/week would work a lot better for life balance. Is there any opportunities like this out there that include benefits?

I’d suggest that the burn out has something to do with other facets of your life, rather than the work. Or just the work. Maybe I’m just used to working a lot as an M&A attorney, but 40 hours per week shouldn’t lead to burn out absent other external factors.

If you can find something that pays the bills for 32 hours go for it, but I’d also evaluate other areas of your life that could be contributions to the burn out. Maybe talk to a doctor or mental health professional.

like

OP, if you’re burned out, you’re burned out. Work with a therapist to determine the cause and make adjustments. Try to take even just a week’s vacation to get some space and rest.

I feel this way at 55 hours. I’m good with 45-55 indefinitely, but really start to hurt about 60. Finding legal jobs requiring less than 55 a week is tough.

like

Agreed. My firm requires 40 billable hours per week so I typically end up between 40 and 55 billables. So basically 50-65 total hours. When I get up to that top threshold I start to struggle.

I'm on the same page, and it's probably underlying mental health not being robust but I've always been this way so 🤷‍♀️ thinking long term work will have to reflect what is best for me. Deloitte allows reduced schedule work, like 80% schedule you would be capped at 32 and that's easiest to enforce by only working on 4 days (as opposed to 5 shorter days).

like

32 hour 4 day weeks are the best. I try and use my vacation to make this happen.

like

Yeah I pretty much take ever other Friday or Monday off. Skipping the weeks that have a federal holiday. Eats up my PTO but it's been real nice.

I don't know any opportunities but I just want to say that you should go for it, regardless if you are a little tired or completely exhausted. Only you know what's better for you. People say that they work 50-55h/week fine, but for me this is way far from what I think it's a fulfilling life. I've once worked 30hr/week and it was the best time in terms of wlb, i did a master with no pressure and I rocked at work. When I was working, i was fully working and was super productive. Now I work 44hr/week and I know I don't want this for too long. Even though I have a flexible schedule, if someday I work 11hours, in the other day I cant do anything with that balance, because I feel tired and can't have quality time after work. I know that several industries have 37h/week option, but i don't know about 32. I wish you luck in your search. You deserve to have the life you think it's best for you!

Why do leaders keep comparing how “good”the new staff/seniors have it because they make more money starting out then they did and working 55 hours is better than the 70-80 hours they used to work? Instead they should compare what options they have available to them and what their goals are.

One of the reasons I want to transition from industry to consulting (tier 1) is that I get frustrated when I have to collaborate with mediocre people. My assumption is that Tier 1 consulting firms hire really sharp people and if I can get in, I’ll be collaborating with folks on top of their game (not expecting much from clients). I’m aware there are personal aspects I need to work on like my mindset, patience etc etc, but I just get so frustrated with blatant stupidity.

Interested in how much others spend on food per month and what that breakdown looks like between at home or ordering out.

My husband and I have no kids and order/go out very rarely, maybe once a month, and our grocery bill for just the 2 of us has risen to around $750-$800 per month this year.

It's starting to feel very unreasonable to spend so much despite not wasting much. I do buy mostly produce but not always organic, and very little meat.
