I’ve been working as a contract TAS for 6 months in a medical device company. I started part time and as it became busier/my trainer quit, I became full-time. I applied for the TA position through corporate and would like some insight. the company is short staffed and my site specifically does not have good TA retention. Hey so just to check on my part. I worked at a place where we went to a firm happy hour and women attorneys were there. A picture was passed around of a really hot woman on Instagram who they are oggled , later after the woman left some guy talked about all the quote whores he slept with. The women weren't sex workers presumably. I'm a male this behavior seems inappropriate to me and made me uncomfortable. Am I expected to exhibit this level of 1950s machismo in my day-to-day life?

PSA - We are headed into a self-imposed economic slow down. Now is not the time to lateral but if you do, I would make sure you are at a recession-proof practice or firm. The top law firms will be okay (they always are) but if you are part of a larger group of associates with no work, you are likely to be axed. Latham did it in the 2008 and 2011 and it will happen again. If you are an associate or really anyone but a rainmaker, you are expendable.

On the transactional side of things, what is the expectation of Associates to start bringing in their own work, or start developing their own book of clients?
When they are mid or senior level?

I'm lateraling to another firm because frankly I think the management of this one is terrible, but the people (and individual partners) I actually work with are awesome. I've only been here for about 18 months, so I imagine that short time frame will make it extra awkward 😬

Mid 2020, I turned down an opportunity to jump ship from my small law firm to a big law firm. At the time I had 4 years of practice under my belt with managerial experience. I thought the offer was reasonable, come in at a 2nd year level, but with the uncertainty of the times I played it safe. Now I regret it. From a vault ranking perspective, is it safe to assume V100 is all sweatshop big law? I’ve made it 5+ years in a NY M&A practice and have consistent exceeding expectations reviews. I’ve had a few mental breakdowns because of work during this time, but thankfully made it through. Me(jr): asked to lead a call for a different deal as training. Mid-level doesn't take notes (also on call) and tells me it's the job if the junior to take notes.

Will firm say anything if I travel and but am still working? Probably intentionally. Probably a week or two. Figure the VPN will tell them

I’m in this business to cure my inferiority complex. Making lots of money, working with fortune 500 clients and walking the streets of NYC with a suit, tie and briefcase makes me feel important and worthy.

I often wish I could be like my law school friends who either moved to small towns or have public sector or non profit jobs, wear sweaters and jeans to work and make far less than me, but are happy with their lives, feel a sense of meaning with their work and don’t need external validation.

What are some reasons you’ve seen people get fired for? And how long did the warning process take, if any?

First year trainee here. Having the standard wobbles but generally surviving.

My question is - how can I tell if I'm doing well? More specifically, what common and avoidable mistakes (specific or general) do trainees make, and what attitude or actions impress you?
