I’m currently an HR Generalist looking to transition to an HR Data Analyst role. What are some things I could do to prepare myself for this position? I’m quite familiar with excel and doing pivot tables, formulas (vlook up is my best friend in my current role) and creating charts/graphs. I’m also very interested in playing around in a HRIS like Oracle, ADP or Workday. I find it to be intuitive to me. Any advice on things I can work on to better myself as a candidate?

PowerBI! If you know pivot tables, this should be a relatively easy to pick up. That said, it’s more tedious… you will get the hang of it quickly. This will set you a part.

Thank you for the suggestion! I will look into it!

like

Oh and of course what you mentioned already with the Excel v-lookups and pivot tables. Also know some basic formulas. Let me know if you need the videos I used. It’s super easy to pick up at least for me

Thank you for the offer! I’m confident in my excel skills but continue to YouTube and Google excel tools and ways to implement them a few times a month. I recently discovered SmartArt and have played around with creating org charts which I think works well!

I’m in the HR tech space now. Also spent some time as a HR analyst too. Im actually looking to get back into the business facing part of HR as I find it more fulfilling so maybe you can give me some pointers too.

1. Focus on speaking to ways you made data driven decisions.

2. If you can, analyze data and present it.

3. It depends on what roles you are looking at but some require SQL, it’s complicated honestly in terms of what roles require these days.

like

I’ve heard of SQL and have received similar reviews where users say it is complicated. Truthfully, that makes me hesitant to move forward with this career choice, but as you mentioned, not all roles require it so I’m going to run with that and plan to explore it after establishing my experience in the HRIT realm. Thanks for the advice!

I recommend learning how to interpret the data, look for trends (1-3-5 year or even quarterly or other timeframes), and being able to tell the data stories that will help leaders make decisions, save money, increase efficiencies, etc. Researching and benchmarking are also important skills to have. Very important is to have attention to detail and make sure any input data is as accurate as possible.

like

Yes, I have experience looking at trends. Typically quarterly trends, but some over the course of a few years. I’ll need to work on my skills when making business decisions based on the data. I’m a huge advocate of “the data is only as good as what you put in”. Appreciate the feedback!

Try to put some points in your resume where you have had a thought or specific project that benefited from the collation of data and analysis that the insights did (or should have) resulted in a change in the way HR worked. Data Analysts use data to either prove things are working or, if a change is made, how this has a positive or negative impact on the situation. Use your generalist expertise to basically say that your analytical mind could be better utilised for better productivity for a business by utilising those skills in a specific analyst role. The bonus for them is that you carry generalist experience.

like

Wow! Fantastic advice… I’ll add in an example to my project highlights section in my resume. Thank you for sharing your insight!

I've been in HRIS for about 7 years now, after transitioning from TA knowing almost nothing about HRIS. In my experience, leaders hire for the right person who can learn and grow, not just their current knowledgebase. Does your company have any mentoring programs? I would connect with someone on the team you are interested in, either formally or informally. Knowing the right people when a role becomes available can be all it takes.

New fish looking for career guidance.

I'm a corporate recruiter with 3 years of experience. Finishing my degree in HRM 5/2022. I'm thinking of getting my SHRM -CP shortly after graduation.

I'm not sure of where to go after that, but I doubt I will stick with recruiting or my current firm.

Has anyone here started off in recruiting and branched out to other HR functions? Do you like your new role? Do you wish you stuck with recruiting?
