Set office hours. You’re not obligated to respond to every request in real time.

Define what constitutes an emergency as well as a protocol for communicating/escalating emergencies to you. Communicate these to your team as well. Coach/mentor/encourage to handle as many things as they can on their own so that they come to you ONLY when they are absolutely stuck.

Set regular 1x1 with direct reports as well as skip-levels if necessary and train them to bring issues in those allocated hours with you.

Take inventory of your calendar and trim as much unnecessary meetings as possible. Figure out which part of day is your most productive and block 2-3 hours in that part of the day for focused work. For this you can use so-called “pomodoro technique” (Google it) to stay on a task for a certain amount of time, then a quick break, then continue.

Because it is indeed true that multitasking is a myth. It takes your brain a few min to get back to an activity and remember what you had been doing. So if you’re interrupted every 2-5 min, you’re not productive at all. It may feel as if you were at the end of the day, because you feel exhausted. But if you look at the actual outcomes from the day, you won’t see much accomplished.

Good luck! ❤️

So many things come down to time management. You might try doing some brainstorming, jot down what's really important and must be attended to every day, and then every week. And create a schedule where you really keep to what you need to do. It's easy to let things slide and get out of control if you're not making lists and checking things off and making sure you get to what really needs to be done.

I honestly over the years tried to make myself accountable for 0 action items or as close as possible. Just delegate those. Follow on on big things, conversations, etc. but eventually you'll drop the ball. Including delivering big things. Id rather spend the time coaching the team.

Same here. I used to think being able to context switch and handle a bunch of things at once was my superpower. It is actually also one of my largest detriments. What leaders focus on is what drives priority. Also, being present and focusing on the people and topic in front of you is one of the greatest things a leader can do for their people.

Just got a freelance gig for $1250 for 2 shoot days, but they’re asking for hourly rate for prep days. Not sure what rate to give them & if I should base it on a 10 or 12 hr hourly rate. Hi everyone!

After years of hard work, I just got my first position in a leadership role! Yay! I’ll be leading a team of 12.
I wanted to know if you had any tips for me, things you wish you knew before, or things previous leaders did for/to you that you found admirable or stayed with you. I want to make sure I’m there for them and want to be a leader they will remember positively.

Thank you so much!!

So my team currently uses onenote to house all of our SOPs and reference guides, but it’s becoming a monstrosity and it’s really hard to search and navigate. What programs do you use to provide your team with resources? Or is there some trick to onenote organization that we are missing maybe?

I had a great review and a 5.5% raise and a great bonus at my company. But I also got a new Director and a peer manager of mine left the company, so I will be absorbing her team. In addition, my director said I will be receiving 'deep delegation' from them. I don't mind more work, but deep delegation is a new term I've never heard. What does that mean lol?

Our annual reviews are approaching & one of my direct reports has been with us for almost six years w/ little growth. My reco was to let him go & find a stronger, hungrier & more motivated designer at the same level. However, my boss instead wants us to promote him in hopes that will spark some motivation. I am not behind this decision & have voiced my multitude of concerns in promoting an employee who doesn't deserve it. HR is behind the decision! Thoughts on promoting an undeserving report?

"Everybody can be a leader" some say... "Leaders are nurtured not born" say others... True.

But... this is also true: "not everybody wants to be a leader" (whether they can or can't be). It is a fairly common practice in organizations with traditional career management structures for people to "be promoted" into leadership roles as the "end steps of the corporate ladder" that was climbed doing technical work. And, unfortunately, this doesn't work all the time
