You gotta be blunt - “I’m really excited for this opportunity to be working with ABC company, is this offer negotiable?”
Wait and see what they say - but this is where I’d go “I presently earn a higher salary, have proven I’m capable of meeting these responsibilities and providing value to the company. 100k is where I want to be, how close can we get to that?”
This is where comp data for your role, location, experience and seniority will also help you negotiate. I use Robert half and pay scale to benchmark. Also get your list of transferable skills and value add skills ready to highlight why you’re worth more.
But let me say this for the folks in the back - always negotiate and advocate for yourself. The worst thing they say is “No”, then you have a decision to make.
Don’t short sell yourself, just be factual and see what they say.
Be willing to walk away
^^^this. You're making $90k. There is no reason to accept less for the same workload. They can either make you an offer that's attractive enough to lure you away, or you can tell them thanks but no thanks.
Was the salary range of the position posted? How many times has it gone back and forth? Are you currently employed or was your last position 90K, but is currently 0K? All of this matters unfortunately
Thank you Sr. HR Generalist 1 for your inspiring insights.
Not every new opportunity is the right opportunity. There is absolutely no reason for you to leave the stability and what you know for the unknown with no benefits.
