In house litigators - what does your workday/life look like compared to being at a firm? Even if there are no billable hours, do the deadlines and the nature of litigation cause it to be equally as stressful as a firm environment?

It’s a different type of stress: the internal clients are always unhappy about the outside counsel bills. So, even when you win outright, or get a good settlement, it’s still money out the door. Plus, you live with case outcomes forever, unlike external lawyers, who just move onto the next case for the next client. All that being said, it’s much more enjoyable than being outside counsel!

Very similar here. There’s also a lot of cognitive dissonance with business folks who got themselves into the messes and completely disclaim any responsibility/involvement.

I sort of feel like the president on the economy — if things are going well, I get all the credit. If things are going poorly, I suffer the blame. Neither is all that deserved. That said there are some days where there are no deadlines or other work and I don’t need to “pitch in on another case.” And I’m never writing anything from scratch, just commenting on complete work product. The most stressful part for me is when management says I need to settle something ASAP and it throws a wrench in litigation strategy and makes me feel like I’m settling on unfavorable terms (mostly ego driven)

Getting over heartbreak and having a full time job is torture lol. My boyfriend and I just broke up after almost a year of being together. It was such a beautiful relationship but ultimately he just didn’t love me. I love him so much. My mind knows that I deserve reciprocal love and I’m worthy, but I feel physically ill. My body hurts, my stomach is in knots, my head hurts. How is it that I have to mend a broken heart but also meet my billable hours lmao

If you do billable work on a given PTO/vacation day, do you still count that day as vacation? Or do you get that vacation day "back"? Or do you only get the part that you billed "back"? (Or some other option.)

I’ve been a freelance print production designer for many years, and usually on-site in the before times. Now I work remote, and am finding it uneasy dealing with billing. Before I always billed hourly, which made sense, but it’s becoming an issue now. Some companies don’t have a full days’ work, so it seems wrong to bill full days, and it allows me to juggle projects for different companies, but my billable hours are down. I know I should bill a daily rate, but not sure that will fly. Thoughts?

Went from a big firm to work for a smaller firm. The people in the smaller firm are protective of their work and are good by their work too. I no longer feel chaos or stress. I am treated with respect and my schedule is more normal. I am even working more billable hours than before, but it feels like a seamless experience. I don’t work then past 5pm or anything out of the ordinary for this time of the year. I am so grateful!

Recent lateral junior associate in brand new practice where I'm the only associate. I'm probably going to bill 1,500 hours max this year due to being very slow and taking time off for a delayed honeymoon which I disclosed during my interview process. I have been told my work product is good, I don't turn anything down, I participate in non-billable work, I'm responsive and I always let people know I'm available to help. Do I need to be worried about getting fired for low hours?

Received a job offer. Was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on a concern I had about it. It's an entry level position, and I don't have much experience. The billables are 2040 a year. For billable hours in civil litigation and insurance defense, is 2040 hours for a 1st year associate on the high end in this field for a small or midsize firm? It seems like most attorneys I know have minimum requirements of around 1800. The compensation is around 80k a year.

Have an interesting scenario. Holiday party season is approaching. At one of our parties (during working hours) there is an optional “talent show.” Employees can win door prizes. We have an entry that is a religious song - like one you would sing in church. I assume we need to let this employee perform this - or we are setting ourselves up for trouble. Likewise, if we permit this song, I assume we cannot compel attendance to the talent show. The talent show is part of a lunch thing.
