Is anyone else crashing hard today? It’s almost 5pm and I haven’t left my bedroom. My kids are fending for themselves and a little confused about why I haven’t come out. Is it depression or am I just burned out? I switched to middle school after the 4th week of school. Some of my students are so disrespectful and even cruel. Do I need to quit my job or do I just need some r and r?

Hello, I can relate to all you just said. I am a middle school teacher (21 years), have depression which I am treating with meds, and feel the end of year burn out already.
I know how disrespectful some students can be. I have wanted to give up a time or two and quit as well. However, I have found that bad years are usually followed by better ones. I am blessed with good team mates that support each other and I love my subject.
On the downside, there is more time wasted on paperwork, extensive lesson plans, and meetings than ever before. Virtual teaching is NOT easier for everyone, and I miss the in-depth learning we had when we actually used a textbook.
I personally feel the year and a half of virtual learning has had a negative effect on student behavior. They have forgotten how to act appropriately in class. Some students resent not having the freedom they had while working online from home.
Know that teachers everywhere are feeling the pain of burn out exhaustion. You aren't alone. Don't be afraid to reach out to your doctor and/or a therapist regarding the depression. It can sap all of the positive energy you have. Self care is vital to keep a work and family balance.
Long distance prayers and hugs for you from Virginia.

Happy wife happy life is a really toxic saying. I’m just shocked how this has become the standard saying for men in relationships. I have friends of mine saying this all the time, and I have just thought it’s so cringe and always want to say my thoughts on it but always decide to hold back. However, imagine the saying reversed - happy husband happy life - that would lead to all kinds of uproar. To me happy wife happy life means I need to sacrifice my wants and needs to make my wife happy.

I moved to Philly from Chicago burbs for my current job in 2017. Love working for this company. They believe in employee growth and put in their time effort and money behind their current employees. 2020 has been though, I still have my job but have never missed my family this much. Since we’ve been working from home, I’ve stayed with family for couple of months. Now I don’t feel like living away from them. Just confused between family and career. Any advice?

I cheated... we aren’t supposed to do real art in the morning. We watch an art video and discuss in the morning, then in the afternoon we post an instructional video and the kids do a small project at home... I cheated yesterday. I handed out air dry clay and went to town with my 3rd grades.... the kids said it was the most fun art class ever. I will get in trouble for passing stuff out, but I needed it. So did the kids. Best art day all year!

Trying to set family expectations and would love thoughts on 2 things. 1. How long after baby will I be ready for visitors beyond our parents? I’m thinking a few weeks. 2. Our 3 grandmothers are 1-3 hour flights away (3 diff places) and cannot travel. When will we be ready to take baby to see them? I’m thinking 4-6 months but that would also be flu/RSV season. Can’t predict the future but family is already talking about trips and I want to set expectations and do what is best for baby. TIA!!

I think living a frugal life and aiming to retire early makes a lot of sense.

Recently, some of my family members are diagnosed with a rare diseases. When you look at the statistics, these are so many of these ‘rare’ conditions and cumulatively they are not rare.

These family members conditions made me reevaluate how I want to spend my life. I am 35 this year and I can’t decide if I should take great vacations with my kids or keep living a frugal life. Do you have the same dilemma?

Subs! Internal subbing is draining the life out of teachers. The sub schedule comes out at the last minute bc of so many teacher absences. It’s the split classes in one period (1/2 Gen Ed and a Special Ed class) Teachers on a cart. Subs pick up students and deliver students. Class changeovers take 10 minutes bc of the domino effect. We’re all waiting for next sub. Teachers are late for their own classes. Students are in chaos with rotating subs. We pay $100 a day. Is the Solution in plain sight?

Self-care tip: Make it a point to discover (then share with your people) your LIFESAVERS.

Lifesaver: preferred item which has unique powers of improving your mood.

“My lifesaver is Milo’s Sweet Tea. When I am in “the trenches”, or the world is on fire, or the ship is sinking with me on it, give me a Milo’s Sweet Tea. I will then be able to survive!”

Common lifesavers:
• snacks (snickers)
• drinks (Sweet Tea)
• songs/bands (Kokomo)
• pop culture references (Ron Swanson quotes)

I’m concerned about the surge in omicron. I packed everything, just in case. Q2 is ending, a new quarter is starting. We get new kids each quarter as a Specials teacher.
It’s stressful at quarter changeovers.
In going back after break, it’s too much of a contrast. I cannot sleep, I wake up in the middle of the night, “for the day”, about 6 nights a week. To stay structured, I go to “Surrender yoga” daily. I’m good to go do 1 more thing after yoga. I feel accomplished. Couching causes anxiety.
