Is glass ceiling still prevalent for Chinese Americans in the US? Biglaw attorney in Asia thinking of moving back to the States but concerned about career progression.

Yes. Worse if you are a female.

Not in big law anymore (went in house) but even after 10 years of practice I find that people still underestimate my experience (and ambitions). Especially as an Asian American woman, I struggle with people thinking that I am younger than I am and so, consequently, assume that I have less experience than I actually have.

like

Omg as a black woman I relate. I was lectured like I was a 19 year old at my previous firm. I immediately started looking for another job. People tend to think I’m 20 and I’m 30🫠.

Yes, this is a problem for any POC, and even worse for women. Representation matters and the situation is very unfortunate.

like

My East Asian colleagues refer to it as the bamboo ceiling.

like

I don't know rather to laugh or cry at this one

like

Don’t do it. Stay. Matter of fact, come get me.

like

Yup, still true. No matter how progressive you think the corporate world is getting , POC will be reminded of how it is actually not

like

YES

It’s very rare to see an Asian partner even though the associate numbers have grown.

If you’re a Chinese national you’re going to have a very hard time in high level corporate law over the next 10-15 years. The government and companies are starting to crack down on the corporate espionage and there will almost certainly be an over correction.

like

Counter question - how does a big law litigation associate with really quality experience land a job in Asia? Would love to leave this dumpster fire.

like

We can swap, I'm doing commercial litigation and international arbitration

Jokes aside, depends on which jurisdiction you're going to. Most require a local qualification to do litigation before courts. For international arbitration it's more relaxed but most firms prefer Chinese speakers.

While progress has been made towards breaking down the glass ceiling for Chinese Americans in the US, it is still prevalent to some degree. Chinese Americans, like other minority groups, still face challenges in career progression, including bias and discrimination in the workplace. But that isn't to say that there aren't any who haven't had success despite it.

Struggling accepting I may have to cut my salary 10k-20k in order to do that…

Additional Posts in Attorneys of Color

Someone on LinkedIn expressed disappointment about the lack of diversity from the big law firms in TX that were posting pics of their summer associates. A managing partner commented that he thought the post might be about a pic he posted (12/14 SAs were white). He tried to defend this by saying that they had LGBT and socioeconomic diversity. The fact that he recognized that his pic might be part of the problem says it all. Law firms need to do better. Sorry, I just wanted to rant.
