I wouldn’t really recommend it.
You can, but you’re going to lose out on actually enjoying the city with going out to dinners, drinks, concerts, shows, etc. And your ability to save for 401k, investments, and your rainy day fund is going to be minimal. This assumes you don’t already have debt/loans.
Utilities are going to run you another $100-150 alone.
Did you do the tax adjustment as well for your take home pay? NYC taxes are much higher than GA
I make 95k a year and my rent is 1.3k. I already don’t save as much as I want, can’t imagine forking out 1.6-1.9 every month for rent
Rising Star
It’s not impossible. Half the city makes less than that as a household.
If you don’t want Manhattan, it’s even easier.
The issue is rent and Manhattan is getting pretty expensive. You generally have to make 40x the rent to even submit an application. You can live within your means on your own but it’ll be tight especially if you have debt.
$1.8k is the lowest price decent studio I’ve seen in Manhattan. Note moving and broker fee will be additional. With that said, don’t let streeteasy discourage you right now. The market is AWFUL for renters. Brokers of 15years in the market are saying it’s unlike anything they’ve seen. If you can wait until 2022, do so. Source: I’ve lived in nyc for 4 years and am looking for an apartment now.
Visual Storyteller
Also, streeteasy isn’t always providing you with decent price or safe housing. Look via friends and colleagues as well.
You won’t be approved by landlord. 1800x40rule is 72k. That’s the income requirement
Guarantors usually in this case
You can do that in Queens but definitely not in a cool part like Forest hills or Astoria
Ahh with a roommate you can get an awesome apartment at that price point. If you want a studio it's a different story.
My dad is a single breadwinner and raised a family of 5 with a salary of $45k. definitely doable if you budget in the outer boroughs
Chief
I would suggest a studio under $1.5k unless you have a decent amount saved up. It's best to stay within the 40x rule. And you might be able to save some money forgoing the car note and using public transportation instead
Nothing is impossible but quality of life will be impacted if you’re dead set on Manhattan. Cost of living is pricy too, groceries and transit etc adds up.
Remember there’s lots of places outside of Manhattan which are way more affordable. I wouldn’t do Manhattan on 55k
Have you considered having roommates? Furnishing a new apartment is tricky and joining forces with a roommate or joining an apartment of established roommates makes having things like a couch and cookware a little easier on your wallet overall
Pro
Seek roommates, don’t pay more in rent than 1500 with your salary. They take a city tax out of your check too. You can live in BK, or Queens, etc and don’t need a car
LOL.
Best you can afford is Jamaica Avenue.
I would suggest you get a gun, but that'll easily run you 1,000 dollars just for the RIGHT to carry one that you'll have to pay an addition 1,000 dollars for an overtaxed handgun.
Oy
No landlord will lease to you without 40x rent or a guarantor with 80x rent. So if you want a 1.5k rent apartment (very hard to find in a safe neighborhood) you need 60k or a parent making 120k
If you're looking in Manhattan neighborhoods, you're not going to be able to get an idea of the cost of living in NYC.
If your criteria is Manhattan, look in Manhattan. If your criteria is NYC, look in NYC
