Is it worth calling in to ask if places are hiring even if they don't have anything open online? I've been desperately searching for over the past year, submitting applications to a lot of retail opportunities online only to be ghosted. Its getting so frustrating putting in all these little details online over and over again only to get no response. At this point, I feel like just ripping the band-aid off and calling in instead of wasting my time.

I personally called every company that popped up on Google in a 15 mile radius and asked if they were hiring (if they didn’t show job listings). If they did have a job listing, regardless of what it was. I applied. I’ve had my job almost five months and I love it

like

From experience I’ve always had better luck calling in, especially going in person and asking for the manager.

Absolutely

I literally got my current job by walking into a restaurant and asking the BH mgr if they needed a dishwasher. Turned out they’d just had 2 quit. Sometimes timing and showing up is all it takes.

like

Absolutely worth it, even better, stop in in-person.

When the job board pickings are slim, I go on google maps and start from my house, then go down to areas where there are businesses, click on them, and get their contact info. Many will have some kind of website (and some you'll find out only have FB, and that's how you apply, so that's a leg up because they don't usually post on job boards like this). Open up about 10 pages, look for the "careers" or "work with us" info on the pages.

Or, if you have a free morning, find a mini-mall/shopping strip area and just go door-to-door asking if they're hiring for any positions. Especially if it's a restaurant, they'll either hand you a paper application to fill out or get the manager and if they're not too busy (pick mid-morning or mid-afternoon avoiding the meal rush times), they'll give you an interview on the spot. Had both happen to me. Restaurants have high turnover and might need an extra body. Even if not, it's a quick way to find out.
Best of luck!
