Is McKinsey good for tech roles? I recently graduated with a CS degree and I got an interview with them for a technical position that will involve coding and doing operations work. I am wondering if anyone could give me insight what it is like to work in a programming/development related role at McKinsey in the US. How would it impact my exit opportunities a year from now? Feel free to DM.

McK isn't tech strong comparatively to Accenture - so if you go there and you are tech strong that's a win for you.

Going from McK people won't be hiring you for your tech skills directly they'll be hiring you because you come from MBB.

like

What are your other options? I know people who are in technical positions with that firm and are very happy with the work and exposure.

like

Accenture is my other option so far. Also interviewing with a couple of tech companies but no offer yet.

McK (and MBB in general) is a bit player in the tech space. They have tech roles and teams, sure, but tech isn't in the firm DNA.

If you want a tech consulting role, I'd go for a boutique or one of the big dogs like ACN or Deloitte.

like

I’ve weighed in on this question before. Mck lacks good tech skills, the center of gravity is still with those who make PowerPoints even within their tech groups.

If you are considering a one year timeframe and exit to tech, I would hard pass. If you are willing to stick it out 5 years to see if they improve, or like the traditional MC exits go for it.

Entered as lead data scientist / junior manger. Junior partner = director. In technical staff wonders happen when you combine prioritization of MBB with technical expertise

Looking for recruiting firms to help me find my next project / program management role.

Struggling to determine which firms can help with PM roles AND I'm struggling to get the ones I do find to respond to me. It may have something to do where I'm at in my career - 15+ years of PM experience & director-level roles at my last 2 companies - so more exec level but not quite C-Suite. Have tons of one-off recruiters hitting me up on LinkedIn about contract PM roles but that's not what I want.
