Wouldn't think of it as industry vs. consulting. Think in terms of seniority. I would have a very hard time believing a partner at any firm could completely disconnect for 1 full month. As in disappear off the face of the Earth and ignore all client calls.
Havent had a problem with PTO in industry. I also combine some work from home and get close to couple months back home
FAANG
Moved to startup with unlimited and we’re very good about having it protected. If it’s a month, you might need to check the occasional email but no calls or anything. Very common for multi week vacations
Mentor
Most people I work with don’t even log pto, you just tell your manager and team you’ll be ooo and you just take the days off.
Just accepted a FAANG offer and went from 6 weeks at D to 4 weeks. That said, I could never really take time off at D. I just got a 35k payout for PTO when I resigned. My friends at FAANG actually fully unplug on vacation and use all their time.
It’s paid in your last paycheck. Your calculation is correct.
I came from industry and at my old company, it was frowned upon to take more than 2 weeks. I think you’ll find it’s company and role-dependant.
In any case, you’ll need prior approval though and work it out with your team just like in consulting.
Similar to G1, we hardly log 1 or 2 days pto. I also take a full month pto every year. I log out a day before thanksgiving and get back after new year.
Enthusiast
Many things are easier outside of consulting and I would consider PTO one of those things
I have colleagues that take 3 weeks PTO and work for another 5-6 weeks in india. Can’t beat that I guess.
@D do you mind sharing where you are headed to ?
Consulting is way worse than industry are you kidding? Lol people actually respect you industry lol. That’s laughable. I once had a manager ask me if I could catch a flight home early from my vacation in consulting lol
