Is there an average number of billable hours for first year associates? I’m about 2 months into clerking and get barred in about 2 weeks and the firm I’m at has me set at a fairly high billable minimum. I haven’t hit it yet and I’m getting nervous because I’m starting month 3 and gonna try to hit it so I don’t start facing possible adverse affects (losing vacation days, getting bumped from salaries to hourly, etc.). It’s a very small firm...

What’s the billable requirement? Is it monthly or yearly? It seems stupid to punish a first year like that for not hitting hours since it’s entirely up to the partners to bring in work.

like

yeah this is actually a higher floor than most biglaw firms are willing to say outloud (not all, but most) and the idea that your hours count when you’ve just started practice is really crazy. you don’t even know what you’re doing yet! maybe worth confirming the hours requirement doesn’t kick in at jan 1? that’s a bit more standard

Usually firms realize that there is a ramp up period during which a new person gets their feet under them. Is there someone that you can talk to about this? The head of my department took me aside and told me not to worry for the first year.

Note that many firms slow down around the holidays so you may have even less work. If you are planning to leave anyway, I wouldn’t panic too much about it. Just keep your head down, do your work, and collect your paycheck.

What area of law?

It’s predominantly personal injury but officially “general civil litigation”

Anyone hiring those who have been out of work for a year? I took time off to tend to personal matters, but I am now looking to get back into the workforce again. My previous experience includes time at B4 audit up to senior level and then transitioned to manager in industry. Senior/manager roles are preferred.

I don’t mind audit. However, I’d prefer it not to be at a B4, as I am looking for some semblance of a work life balance.

DM me if you have something above, thanks.

What should I do? Should I be worried? I am currently in tax advisory. I’d say over 1/2 of us have not been at utilization % the leaders wants us to be at. Just seems across the board billable hours are down. Some of us are getting loaned out to the tax compliance team. Yet our group is still hiring folks?! I feel as if partners/senior managers are just unhappy with the talent they do have and are fishing for better. Am I way off?

Received an offer from a startup today. 10% pay cut to my base but get equity in the company through stock options. Also requires a move from Canada to the Bay Area. Startup seems legit based on funding ($200M) but not sure about the pay cut. Health care 100% by employer and 401k match with unlimited PTO. What would you do?

You’re either not valuable to your company and/or your job isnt that important if you’re able to take PTO and not at least send some e-mails.

I love my firm, but just got an offer to move firms for a bigger chunk of change and lower billable hours requirement. Logically, it makes sense to move, but I’m hesitant. Both firms seem great culture-wise. I am young and succeeding at my current firm. Any thoughts?

Is it wrong that I'm sort of pissed off by this? Should I say something?

If you have to work a full day on a firm holiday (like Labor Day), you should get an extra vacation day. Thoughts?

Had a recruiter call me about a job I was being considered for, but didn’t know the salary range, the bonus figure, or the PTO. Basically none of the information a perspective candidate needs to know to form an opinion of whether or not this might be a good fit for them. This isn’t the first time I’ve dealt with this kind of nonsense either.

Let me know your similar experiences. I think we’re all being phished and taken advantage of whenever possible.

What's the work life balance like at fisher & Phillips? How many hours a month are you actually billing? Do you have most weekends off? Are you always "on call", even on weekends and when you take vacation? Would be helpful to know the office location.
