It just occurred to me that it is an option in life to have a job that does not have a utilization metric. Not sure I can fully fathom that in this exact moment.

Has it occurred to you that pretty much every job has a metric attached to it?

like

Totally. Join the Marine Corps. 100% utilization and your new metric is KIA

What about a bunch of no profit jobs that aren't related to fundraising? Also, a lot of gov't jobs don't have metrics tied to them and you pretty much can't get fired after three years. You have a very good point though. I've just been killing myself this week in order to compensate for upcoming PTO (utilization-wise) and it has sucked.

Every job has some kind of metric, but NOT this utilization metric, just plain dumb.

like

Had me*

Yeah, I don't have utilization problems, but I don't like how a weeklong vacation will lower it. I've been working across a 12 hour time zone for the last week trying to be everything to everybody. It is exhausting and I am only at 32 hours despite killing myself. Whatevs

Vacations impact utilization?! They don't at ACN

Yeah, I've heard that a million times on FB from people from ACN. Yes, PTO at Deloitte does ding your utilization!! I find it kind of shitty and antithetical to encouraging people to relax, recharge, and unplug. Kind of wrong the more that I think about it.

Hence my comment above.

Is the new Deloitte client service hours metric also a thing for commercial or is that just for fed?

Every job has a metric. I ran utilization at my old industry company. We used it to judge how efficiently the bosses were using their people, we recognized lower staff has no control of their workload. Utilization makes sense in the Tax world but not Advisory.

I’m struggling. I left an agency I liked last year due to growth limitations and since then I’ve worked at 2 different agencies and can’t seem to find my footing. The first one seemed like a good fit at first but then it turned out to not be the best place for me so I left. At my current agency I feel super undervalued. I’m always raising my hand and offering to help where I can and no matter what I do, I don’t feel utilized or valued or part of the team. It’s really taken a toll on my confidence

Busy season was rough, things are looking better now as things return to normal. Still working crazy hours if you count the daycare duties on top of utilization targets.

I have a Deloitte PDM offer. I’ve read about the positives/negatives and I’m so torn. Third question: I’m new in the DC area, are PDMs invited to firm socials? Trying to make friends! Thanks in advance

Just a reminder that outside our bubble no-one really cares about firm prestige etc.
