I've had bad experience with recruiters in the recent past and interested in hearing your thoughts on it - are they actually helpful? Or should I just start applying on my own instead?

Yes some of them are actually good and can get you some great offers but you have to sift through

Yeah, that’s my take. You think there’s a chance to find something good by yourself?

If youre in th DC, maryland, northern virginia area, happy to share info on the recruiters i've worked with. 2 out of the 4 jobs ive had in my career were jobs i got through a recruiter. A 3rd one would have happened but i accepted another offer

like

thank you it’s helpful! I’m in nyc, but would appreciate the info anyway :)

Agree. I started working with recruiter and has been great. They sent you the list of jobs available per your wants and needs. They also prep you for the interviews and even exit interview. I am very happy now and highly recommend working with one. I landed the job, but did not start yet, so hopefully all feedback about company and team they had will be what they said.

Does anyone have Recommendations on how to get up to speed/good questions to ask during the phone screen?

I would assume the first call will be pretty standard to any other company, but just want to be prepared.

My firm’s IT (especially system saving and file locating function) is so bad 😐😞 and they keep doing updates no one asked them for just to mess with the stuff we already got a hang of without doing anything about the issues we actually need fixed. Anyone else in a similar boat? Do you bill the client for the time it takes to fix the IT issue (or IT inefficiency generally, like time taken to find a file in a convoluted system)? Or is that supposed to be our non-billable time?
