Hands down, Los Angeles.
The homeless situation is being actively addressed and will hopefully get better in the months to come. Besides, you won’t have much of a problem with homeless in areas like Miracle Mile/Beverly Grove, Studio City, Sherman Oaks, Pasadena, Culver City, Brentwood, West Hollywood. The issue is a lot less pronounced in these areas. Or if you end up in the South Bay, the issue is virtually nonexistent. Not to mention, San Diego has a pretty bad homeless issue too.
TLDR: LA offers diversity, food, live entertainment and things to do in general on a whole other level that SD cannot compare with.
I fully disagree with your analysis of the areas where you say homelessness won’t be much of a problem. I’m assuming that by “problem” you are referring to the existence of homeless people on the streets. For context, I work in criminal defense and have lived and/or worked in all of those areas. Those areas are also not very diverse; they are predominantly white neighborhoods.
I would also not say the “problem” of homelessness is being addressed. Very little is being done to deal with the underlying issues that have created the large homeless population in LA. Until that happens, homelessness will continue.
Homelessness will exist in any major city, particularly those in SoCal due to the nice weather. Random attacks by homeless people in LA are not common. Police targeting minorities in LA is a huge problem.
San Diego definitely has a much more suburban feel to it.
I live in San Diego. It’s small, you reach everywhere in 20 minutes or less. The city is slow, sometimes boring and without so many options like L.A. I’m latino too, never had any problems here, people are super friendly. The thing about homeless is true, there are tons spread out in here. The majority of places are pet-friendly, we have a dog beach, costs are lower than L.A (rent, restaurants, etc), much less job opportunities and small companies. Nice to go to Mexico sometimes, Valle de Guadalupe, Ensenada. Now being realistic, I feel like if you want to chill out this is the place, I’ll definitely return to SD when I retire. ✌🏼
Thanks for your response! I’ve also thought about the fact that LA has more job opportunities.

San Diego is still very diverse and great place to live but LA is on another level. LA has something for everyone and better job opps if u wanted to leave bcg but it has more downsides of large cities.
I would visit both!
If you visited LA and loved it you should move there. I’m from SD but live in LA now and they’re quite different. If diversity is your priority I think you’ll be happier in LA.
You’re description sounds totally LA. I think you’ll thrive there. Visit San Diego when you want a relaxing beach weekend. Or come visit me in OC! I grew up in Boston area. Neither LA or San Diego are similar. Way more laid back here, and far less intellectual.
Thank you! I’m definitely looking for a more laid back environment and after more research and all of your comments, I think LA would be the best choice for me now.
Thanks so much! I visited LA before and loved it. My one concern is the homeless population and the amount of attacks and I hear the police aren’t quick to act when it comes to homeless attacks. I know a couple of people who have been attacked and that’s a major concern of mine. I’ve heard San Diego is basically Boston with nice weather which is also a concern to me. I love the smaller city vibe but need more diversity.
I’m in OC too! Agree nothing like Boston.
They are defunding police all across California tbh...
