Let me tell y'all: If someone tell you don't apply for a job because u don't have the exp. a degree. Just Please apply. I know people with degrees making $40-50,000 a year(sad). I applied for a job as an Claim Audit, didn't even have a lot exp. Like 4mos. And I got the job and it pays $64,000 (not alot) but it's ok to me without degree. Just remember you will get trained I been there now for 7mos and love it. I don't want to owe any school loans and not making enough to pay it back.

I’m here to share and support this post. You can definitely make good money without a degree. 64k is decent and 5 years ago when I was working in the mortgage industry I thought it was the best I could ever get. However, I started researching and learned how much more money I could make as an executive assistant versus an admin assistant. They are essentially the same role in most cases, just titled differently and usually if titled correctly you will only support one person as opposed to supporting several like you do as an admin assistant. 5 years ago I was making 40k a year as an admin assistant for a mortgage broker. Today I make more than double that as an executive assistant. Be strategic, know what you want, pay a resume writer, and only decline interviews that won’t share the salary range in advance of the interview stage.

Congrats!! You definately do not need a degree to make good money. I was at a law firm for 13 yrs as a legal secretary. I was making $60k. I applied to another firm, same position and I am making $85k now. I do not have a degree. I was terrified with leaving that firm. It was the only firm I ever worked for. I took a chance and I got the job. Don't be afraid and just go for it!!

like

That's so good, I been Legal Assistant for 7yrs. I just didn't really like it. But that's so good. I'm glad to h ar b cause pepe think u need a Degree, No u don't with good exp. You will be good.

like

Definitely needed this encouragement!

like

Absolutely agree! My experience is exactly the same as all of the other people with degrees. So I still apply but, I have noticed a lot more job listings are showing that they “prefer a degree”. I have also noticed jobs for a mail clerk wanting someone with a degree, which I found ridiculous. Employers really need to rethink their requirements.

like

Exactly "I agree 💯 "

No for sure. I have a degree, not in my exact field, and make about $32k a year.

like

Just apply for jobs even if u think u may not get, look at the description and see if you have done those roles(or some) before even if it was for a short time and just apply. Good Luck to you

Amen!

I could not agree with this more. One of the assistants at the company I work for had no experience and no degree and she makes more money than I do with a degree. Defintiely don't let requirements hold you back.

Hi all, I have a question regarding retirement accounts. I am not sure if I should choose a Roth or 401k (company has 4+2% match). Currently 23, base salary is ~100k and investments have brought 45k this year which has me teetering between a 22-24% tax bracket. Wondering what the usual tax bracket is of people retired (around 65yo) as I’m not sure anything would bring in significant income with the exception of investments. In my case would a Roth make sense? Appreciate any answers!!

I am surprised and concerned about the fact that a lot of my colleagues do not have good excel skills. I literally had to show someone higher rank than me probably 30ish, how to do a “find” in excel for the workbook. This isn’t limited to people who have been out of school for awhile. This also includes new hires and staff, and seniors. Partners forget about it. They probably aren’t involved at all in building out the work paperwork but I feel staff, seniors and managers should be good users

Additional Posts in Administrative Assistants

I am in the process of finding administrative assistant interns from our local universities. In an effort to make my job opportunity appealing, I am asking everyone in this bowl about an appropriate job title. Is "Administrative Assistant" outdated or unappealing? I certainly don't want to mislead anyone on the job responsibilities, but I do want to avoid any potential negative stereotypes attached to that job title. Are there alternative titles that you find more appropriate for 2022?
