1) As much as possible, live beneath your means and bank the savings.
2) Pay off your credit card every month without fail, even if it means borrowing from savings.
3) Use public transportation as much as possible (I ride the bus to work and love it). If you need a car, get something affordable, reliable and then drive it forever.
4) Eat at home/make your own meals as much as possible.
5) Develop this mindset: Everything is negotiable. Even when they say it’s not…it still is.
6) Volunteer. It’s a free, worthwhile activity and really puts things into perspective.
There's a savings order of operations floating around on here somewhere. The Money Guy has some good content for it as well. If you're in a lot of debt, consider Dave Ramsay's baby steps.

Keep your finances private to keep expectations of friends and family low
Limit food choices to few healthy items. Most families waste too much food
Set it up as a direct deposit, so you don’t see any of that money in your checking account. Adopt the mindset that the money in your checking account is all you have in order to pay your bills each month.
It has helped me be more mindful of my expenses and make sure I live below my means.
