Looking to dip my toes into vintage sports Rolex with a 1680 sub, but was wondering how much you have to baby them? I don’t plan on diving with it any time soon, but if I got caught in the rain or did a little surface swimming, would it be fine?

Probably. Unless it isn’t. That’s kind of the deal with vintage.

Specifically, if you were to replace the crystal, crystal gasket, crown and case back gaskets it’d almost certainly be waterproof as long as there’s no pitting along the mating surfaces. But if you’re running a vintage acrylic crystal you probably shouldn’t chance it.

You can have original parts or you can have as-new levels of waterproofing, but you can’t have both. People dove with acrylic crystals for decades, they are perfectly capable of delivering fantastic performance, but you can’t get performance like that with an acrylic crystal from the 1970s. You have to put in a new one.

It's fundamentally a tool watch designed to get wet and dirty. Just keep up with the maintenance. I did replace the acrylic with crystal as a matter of preference (optical clarity). And had my steel bracelet repaired for stretch from wear typical of watches its age.

I do wear around the house, swimming, snorkeling... haven't taken it diving as I prefer my Panerai.

Here's mine with a custom Horween NATO strap.

Love the open 6 😁

You can get it tested for water resistance at a watch shop (they’ll probably have to send it out though). If you were actually going to dive with it though, I’d want to get it serviced like mentioned above so you had new seals.

Personally, I’d never scuba with a vintage watch that I didn’t already have in my possession for a decade or more. Just buy a beater diver or a modern sub if you want total confidence.

I dated my ex for about 4 years and before we broke up we had moved in together. We lived together for about 6 months before breaking up. I kept the apartment and she moved out. Is this something I should tell my current girlfriend without it coming up naturally? She has told me she doesn’t care about what happened in my past relationships and that she is happy to talk about them but that we don’t need to. I’m just not sure if I should tell her about it, or wait for it to come up in conversation

How do you deal with parental guilt when you have to miss things? When my child was a baby it wasn't as big of a deal as long as I was around for the big stuff and was pulling my weight parent wise. Now that they're 4+ everything is big stuff, and every time I can't be there it really affects them. I know being successful in my career will set them up for the future, but it feels like I'm letting them down right now.

How many married professionals with young families are just sticking it out “for the kids”? Marriage is very dead and has been for a while. Young kids 4 and 1. My wife and I don’t fight, but share 0 interests outside of the kids and can’t stand to be around each other. I’m so ready to leave… I just can’t bear the thought of doing it to my children even though another part of me feels like wife and I would both be better parents if our lives were separate. Anyone else done a similar analysis?

One of my good friends is not very cautious with her approach to COVID and it's made me pretty uncomfortable, so I recently decided I don't want to risk seeing her in person anymore. I thought I could just decline invites to meet up, but she's getting persistent. Is there a polite way to tell her the truth without coming off as judgmental? She can certainly make her own decisions; I just don't want to put myself at risk by meeting up.

Read that McK is paying 2K higher than BCG this year which means BCG will probably raise again next year to at least match. However, they can’t just copy McK with 2K to match because that would look bad so they’ll have to beat it again. Then McK and Bain will follow. Barring a devastating recession, I’m guessing this means MBB is all getting raises again next year?
