I look for red flags including high turnover rates, vague answers about culture, visible burnout in employees, dismissive or defensive interviewers, unrealistic job expectations, and negative reviews mentioning toxic management or lack of support. Trust your instincts if something feels off.

Yep! You can:
1. Ask about turnover during the interview.
2. Check Glassdoor or Indeed for reviews.
3. Chat with current/former employees on LinkedIn.
It’ll give you a feel for their vibe.
Your best bet is to work for yourself. Managers seem nice in the beginning, then many of them change. Some are on a power trip, others just plain mean because they are miserable. 💯
This is very true I’ve experienced this my self
Check customer review sites. Not the company's own sites where they can weed out the bad stuff, but sites like Trustpilot, Consumer Reports, and Customer Reviews, Better Business Bureau. They don't just collect customer reviews, but reviews from patients, employees, etc.
Never thought of looking here, thank you!
I see two options. Yes, when people, good people, are getting laid off and others aren’t…I can see how uncomfortable that situation must be.
When I first graduated pharmacy school with my doctorate, I felt bigger than world. At the time pharmacists were in such demand they were giving away 30k sign on bonuses to recruit. So not only did I feel really smart, in a wierd way I felt untouchable. It was almost like they needed me far more than I needed them and I felt in complete control. When it came to start working in the store, I essentially told everyone that I was not going to do anything that some else could do and that my time is best spent doing “Pharmacist” things.
As time started rolling on I was starting to get upset that my staff was getting lazy. Coming in late, never volunteering, and to some degree I felt at times they were sabotaging me. For example telling the patient, sure we can do it in 15 minutes, and of course you can come in after hours and the pharmacist can help you. So now, not only am I getting pissed each day, the technicians were as equally upset.
I would come from work and bitch about how I’m being mistreated and the techs are making me miserable.
Eventually, the pot boiled over….nothing was getting done, patients were upset, there was essentially zero communication between any of us my boss had started zeroing in on my store…it was getting dicey.
So after months and months of complaining and work getting more toxic, I started to realize it was toxic because of me.
Almost over night, I switched my approach from being a first class a-hole to showing genuine concern for my staff. I started ordering a pizza on Fridays for everyone, I remembered their birthdays and got them small gifts. I gave them a Christmas bonus out of my personal bonus realizing we all work hard and it’s (to me) unfair I got a bonus and they didn’t. Within 2-3 months the pharmacy had done a 180 and we started getting recognized in the district as a top performing store. I felt good, my staff felt good.
My lesson to you and anyone else in a toxic work environment, try to really consider if it’s somewhat toxic because of you. If you walk around pissed all day, essentially that’s how other people will treat you. I’m not going to sit at lunch listening about how everyone is getting the shaft. I’ll stick with people that are nice.
Part two.
If you apply for a job and it seems like there has been some mismanagement in the past, it doesn’t mean it will stay that way. If you are a new hire, that’s a great time to be your best. Do your best, be a leader. Eventually youll be recognized and be one of the first picks for more money and promotion opportunities.
A toxic work environment doesn’t have to stay that way if people can bend a little.

Thank you for sharing your story. It's a powerful reminder that our attitude and approach can truly shape the workplace environment. Taking ownership, showing genuine care, and fostering a positive atmosphere really can turn things around. Your example of shifting from frustration to leadership is inspiring. Toxicity can improve if everyone, including ourselves, makes an effort to listen, support, and lead by example. Great perspective!
That can be stressful. I just got out of toxic work environment best decision ever.
Congratulations! Hope you found something better.
I used to check Glassdoor ratings. Which company BTW?
I'm posted reviews that have been removed. If possible chat with an employee for the inside scoop. Look and listen.
Try to talk to an employee when they are not at work say ay local snack bar. Or listen in on employees when they are having coffee. Or try to ask employees who left, say on LinkedIn In. Most people very careful about what they say when at work.
The way I see it in my opinion, if there’s a union, it’s gonna be toxic, but at the same time I don’t know if you’re in one or not because you’re saying there’s gonna be layoffs and you would think for the union there is job protection… but if it’s a budget thing that’s different I believe. Unions only protect the bad workers and the only thing they are good for for good workers is their benefits and pension. I work for a non-union hospital and we get paid a lot more than most union hospitals and it’s not toxic because people can’t just say anything or have a negative attitude and get away with it like you could if there is a union as long as you don’t do anything completely unethical or get into a physical altercation with anybody because I believe with unions, there’s zero talent for a lot of that stuff if you get physical with somebody

No thanks!
For those who have concerns about working in workforce, people get experience while working for the first time, use your life or education as an experience and apply what was learned. Find what you are passionate about and go from there. Unfortunately workforce environment is out of our control and stay true to yourself than chose not to be apart of that environment
I agree. I know sometimes we want out work place to be fun happy and like a sports team friendship thing, but honestly. its work and your their with work, outside of that if your friends its different. Protect yourself and sanity and just work and keep things to yourself.

I always try to ask about the last person in the position… what made them successful, why did they leave etc
I do this too!
Make sure when you go to an interview, do just that. Do your research before having any type of interview, don’t forget to check the site, “BossReportCard.com”. In the upper left is a dropdown where you can do a search (keep in mind that if it is one person complaining the odds are that the problem was that person, not the boss). Have some questions and ask the person you are interviewing with about the position, the people that would be coworkers, ask about the person that would be your manager (especially if you are not being interviewed by him/her, facial expressions say a lot). Ask if the position is new? If no, does this position have a high turnover rate?
I guess people weren’t using preferred PRONOUNS 🤣🤣
After searching my tail off I found EarnBetter.com. You should check it out
I use the job listing sites, usually have formed employee feedbacks, like here, or indeed and so on. You can, actually ask to shadow the clinic for a few shifts to see the staff interactions. get to know the culture. And do NOT be affraid for ask questions with the people that work the day to day grind. HR person will have no clue on the culture and dynamics of the place. I have many times been the person at the clinic that a potential hire, came in did a reference interview and shadowed me for like half a shift. I encourage that and also any form of pay discussion is perfectly legal, and NOT illegal despite what the employer handbook may threaten the employee with.
How high is the turnover?
