It can be difficult to have family members unsupportive of your career. However, it's important to remember that it is possible to change their minds and help them understand the importance of law enforcement.
Remember the power of leading by example: having good relationships with other members of law enforcement and showing dedication can go a long way toward demonstrating how much you value your chosen career path.
Why don't they support your career? What do you feel is happening that you don't feel supported?
The best thing you can do is educate your family, there are people who when a policeman stops them use excuses related to homophobia, racism, or xenophobia trying to minimize the crime that is actually committed and that stigma is something that has entered many homes of our country making whatever you do look bad just because you're a cop is something you can't change alone.
Wait for them to be robbed, or suffer an attack and you arrive with your badge and uniform to bring order to the problem, then they will begin to support you as a police officer, I am telling you with complete certainty because it is something that happened to my family and me.
Well, I'm a policewoman, my parents never wanted me to be, my other sisters didn't want it either and neither did my boyfriend at the moment, everything in my life changed now all my brothers wear blue and my boyfriend is a detective, what I did It was changing family.
I don't think you should do anything, just do your job, you don't work to improve the lives of your family, you work to improve the lives of all the people in the country, there will be someone who supports your work and if they don't, it's a pity.
With the image we have in the media and different media in different modalities, people have a wrong image of all the police, they judge us all equally and it is a virus that reaches our families.
My children felt embarrassed when they said that I was a police officer at their school, they did not want me to take them to school in uniform and they were only 8 and 10 years old, it is not something they learned at home, it is something that is in the environment, really It hurts me a lot to live that in my own house but I can't do anything except work and see that my children one day see that I always wanted to be a good police officer.
We work to try to make the world a better place for our family, friends, and the general public, and despite that, many people have a bad opinion of us, of all police officers due to the mistake of some. It's kind of unfair.
I think by letting them know that youre in that field because you care about making a difference and that is the way you're doing it.
People assume that it is an inherently dangerous job, but I disagree. I think there is a lot of fearmongering surrounding cops because of movies and TV shows. They're not at all representative of real life.
Tell them that you're proud to be part of a profession that works to protect and serve the public. It takes dedication, hard work and resilience to make it in this field, let them know how you feel about this!
Help them remember all the great things that law enforcement officers do each day to keep our communities safe.
