If their writing is good, I would guess they aren’t dumb they just need some guidance. I would spend the extra few mins to teach them

Tell him he needs to spend time learning these tools. I have a mentee who can’t work a calendar and I can’t be bothered to teach that. I was resourceful enough to figure it on my own. He can take the time to research and learn this stuff otherwise you’re showing him that someone will always be there to spoon feed him.
Yes take the initiative, that’s part of the point of interns. Obviously they have potential.

Please take a few minutes to point intern in the right direction. S/he will appreciate you for it. When i was a newbie to the firm i found myself helping folks with years of experience in areas that i was new to me (that annoyed me in the worst ways)...but it forged relationships that i now rely on...while i had to help them in a few areas, there were areas where they helped me. Life is give and take eh. You could be shaping their future😊
For people under your care, their failure is in you and your leadership skills. I would point to resources first and then sit down with him for pain points.
Honestly ? Tell him that as feedback. “I expect you to show more initiative in this case because these are basic skills. It’s ok to ask me question, but you should at least try to find this on your own first.”
I know my first time leading a team I struggled with all kinds of traits. You just need to tell them. The good ones will respond, the bad ones will drown.

🤣not when intern is in grad school, plz show intern the deep end
Let's see how it goes!
How do you get to grad school and not have basic excel skills? What's this person's major?
I don’t understand either. Environmental and land use planning. For undergrad he did a double major in natural resources and legal studies. He also has six years of experience. And is probably around my age. I'm really confused tbh.
Depends on who they are, intern just using as stepping stone to next company or location… or someone that is looking to get hired afterwards… the latter tends to be more enthused to listen and learn. Whereas the first tends to already have their plans and just going through the motions. E.g. someone’s child that is just there temp, in a couple of years will likely be your boss. Tread lightly and build a relationship if ya can.
Commit to doing this one time to see how he engages and updates his work.
If you see no improvement, you’ve done your part. You can’t help people who don’t want to be helped.
Yep, gonna give it a shot.
