My manager recommended I take a course that costs $800 and it takes 3 weekdays. I asked if he would be able to cover a % and if I would be taking vacation days for that. He said he could cover it all and cover for me on those days so I don't need to use my vacation time. I feel really grateful but super undeserving at the same time, I feel that I don't deserve this. What if I let her down and this turns out to be a waste of money on me?

Don’t overthink it, just do it! Sounds like you have a manager that values your professional growth!

You are most definitely worth it and if your manager didn’t think so, she wouldn’t be offering!!

Because people should always be proud and feel deserving? Noted

That is really standard, but being grateful is refreshing. Stay positive!

YOU ARE WORTH IT! i have shoes that cost more than $800

Your worth is equal to if not greater than my shoes!

Most likely, equal to.

If you want to stay negative about just think that maybe the manager thinks you're so terrible they need to spend this money just to get you up to par and are happy to get you out of the office for 3 days

Oh man.. my boss once signed me up for a course (I didn’t know that she signed up the whole team, I thought it was just me)… and the first place my mind went to was this. That my boss thought I needed remedial training.

like

I don't think your manager would pay for it out of his own pocket. EY pays for courses like that and you should take advantage of it. I got all my certs financed by EY

You are deserving. They wouldn't be supporting it if you weren't! Get it!!!

Do it! Cos you’re worth it.

It’s normal to have professional developed covered for jobs, it’s a good part if any employee retention plan as well as to grow the skills of your teams. You are worth it! Enjoy the experience!

It’s in their interest to increase your worth through professional development so they can charge more for you. Soak it all in… it’s part of the deal. If a manager suggests you take a course you pay for on PTO run for the hills…

Believe in yourself. Confidence does show. Often times people aren’t confident in themselves and that become more of a roadblock than actual skills. Manager would only offer those because they believe it’s worth it, the risk is acceptable because they believe you are good enough to grab the opportunity and be the best you can be, that is confidence in you. So if they believe in you, why shouldn’t you?

like

Literally every time you get promoted or take on a new time it’s going to be uncomfortable. Just trust your intelligence and have the confidence to deliver on the task.

Your worth is what you value yourself and your time/skills at. Usually most people eventually catch up and see your worth through what you project out. Good leaders can spot your worth through the noise and nudge you to achieve it even when you aren't feeling up to it. Sounds like you have a good leader helping nudge you! Be hungry and don't let your fears and uncertainties get in the way of your success - use them to drive your preparation. Good luck!

I just pushed HR to approve external courses that are 3k for each of my reports. They deserve it and so do you!

This is development and should be part of everybody's growth plan. Feel good about it and make sure take advantage and pay it forward in the future.

P.s: your manager sounds like an amazing human being.

Yea $800 at EY probably isn’t a big deal. I’ve taken several courses that cost >$2k.

A lot of these courses help your practice bill clients for more money in the long run.

like

$800 isnt even a drop in the corporate world. Don't sweat it, they have budgets for this and you are absolutely worth it.

If your manager didn’t see potential in you he wouldn’t be extending this offer. You’re going to do just fine

How much stock do you put on benefits? I have two offers with stark differences in benefits. Job 1: role I want, but benefit sucks (2 weeks paternity leave, 20% coinsurance). Job 2: role is okay but higher level and great benefits (16 weeks paternity, 0% coinsurance, 5 more days of vacation). Total comp is the same though. I wonder if I should just focus on role but Job 2 is a large company, so I can move around after 2-3 years I’d expect. Thoughts?
