So much depends on location. Generally speaking, I’ve been happy with on-post schools over my 22+ years in the army. It’s not always perfect; but the kiddos are surrounded by students who share very similar life experiences e.g., fast friends, frequent moves, etc. Also, there’s a safety component on-post that’s hard to replicate off-post. Again, location dependent.
My husband's in the military, and we're currently deciding what to do with our kindergartner. I really feel torn because I want her close by but I worry that the lack of diversity on the base (in terms of diversity of experience, not identity) will just completely shape her whole life, and I don't know if I want that.
We decided to choose an off-base school to give the kids a break from all the military chaos we bring home with us every day
