New grad. Starting at a small defense side med mal firm. Looking on information from anyone in this path on what the career trajectory is like for this line of work.

I'd like to move into a bigger firm after a few years. Am I stuck to med mal? Is it possible to change practices or am I pigeon holled. I have a Healthcare background so I'm not worried I won't like the work, mainly just want to know if it's possible to move to big firm to make some real money with a med mal background.

If you can get yourself on any medical product/medical device cases, that will help with moving to a larger firm, as they typically have more high stakes device cases than small med mal shops

I did four years med mal defense, got as much dep and trial experience as possible, then leveraged that to lateral to Am Law 50 pharma and med device product liability defense. Good luck.

A1, I've been trying to get into the drug and device area, however my current firm doesn't really do any - just mostly med mal - anything you can think of that would help me start learning the practice area/build some extra points for my resume? Also, what does your typical day usually consist of?

If you have a health care background i would figure out how to get into a firm that handles more kinds of healthcare work (fraud and abuse, stark act/AKs, doctor licensure/accreditation and peer review issues, and all the grab bag of things law firms that do generalist outdide counsel work for health systems and hospitals. More interesting work, they will appreciate your industry bg, and broader in-house and biz dev opps.

This is what I do - healthcare regulatory and transactional work. It’s a great field to be in with lots of opportunities both at firms and in house.

like

Echoing what the people above said re gaining as much experience as possible. If your firm also handles peer review, med device, and other healthcare issues then try to get as much of that work as possible. I recently left my job at a med mal defense firm. The subject matter is interesting, talking to experts was awesome, but you will pigeonhole yourself if you stay too long.

My partner of over 1 year dropped a comment that made me feel very uneasy. He said that he loves everything about me but wishes I was a bit more socially active. I love being on my own, reading, watching series, FaceTiming friends and family abroad. I moved to London 2 years ago and because of the pandemic it has been hard to establish solid relationships here. I’ve been running into weird happenings at my new firm learn of everything “I misunderstood” about my package. I don’t actually qualify for quarterly bonuses at a pro-rated billing rate; no 401ks till year 2; and the biggest—we don’t qualify for a raise unless we are here during the entire fiscal year. We have a 2100 billable req which I’m barely hitting. We also get paid below 6 figures. I learned that the new associates came is at least $10k over us. I graduated 2020–but 1st firm job. Advice?

Young lawyer here. I fell for an impersonation scam. Scammer pretended to be a very senior partner at my firm. I am mortified and embarrassed, as it’s not something I would normally fall for. I was in a rush and when I saw the partners name on the email my knee-jerk reaction was “if he says jump you ask how high”. I don’t care about the money I lost, I care far more about the opinions of others at my firm who now know about this (managing partner etc.). Is my credibility shot?
