If you can get yourself on any medical product/medical device cases, that will help with moving to a larger firm, as they typically have more high stakes device cases than small med mal shops
I did four years med mal defense, got as much dep and trial experience as possible, then leveraged that to lateral to Am Law 50 pharma and med device product liability defense. Good luck.
A1, I've been trying to get into the drug and device area, however my current firm doesn't really do any - just mostly med mal - anything you can think of that would help me start learning the practice area/build some extra points for my resume? Also, what does your typical day usually consist of?
If you have a health care background i would figure out how to get into a firm that handles more kinds of healthcare work (fraud and abuse, stark act/AKs, doctor licensure/accreditation and peer review issues, and all the grab bag of things law firms that do generalist outdide counsel work for health systems and hospitals. More interesting work, they will appreciate your industry bg, and broader in-house and biz dev opps.
This is what I do - healthcare regulatory and transactional work. It’s a great field to be in with lots of opportunities both at firms and in house.
Echoing what the people above said re gaining as much experience as possible. If your firm also handles peer review, med device, and other healthcare issues then try to get as much of that work as possible. I recently left my job at a med mal defense firm. The subject matter is interesting, talking to experts was awesome, but you will pigeonhole yourself if you stay too long.
