New manager is slightly incompetent but not sure overall project lead knows. New manager is looking to me to provide direction and I don’t know (nor should I know) how to manage the team and guide the project. See this going downhill very fast. Is this normal? Do I need to speak up about my concern?

If this goes south it will harm you too. Stepping up abs supporting manager is the best outcome. Letting them take some credit so they become an ally an advocate is also important here. If they really cannot be saved then you need to start documenting everything and perhaps challenging them a bit so it is clear they suck. However, throwing someone under the bus rarely works long term. Never just wound someone. Unless you totally crush them they will find a way to get back at you.

I was a new manager once and the senior consultants that gave me break have been repaid several times over in terms of me advocating for them on performance rounds.

I think there is a pretty wide gulf between asking for help and asking you to manage the team/project

Is the new person struggling because they aren't very bright in general, or did they get put into something they've never worked on before (like a Supply Chain expert somehow being put onto a pricing strategy project)?

like

if it's the former, then yes you probably need to escalate. If it's the latter, give them a little bit more time to reset and re-orient if the engagement is something far outside their usual comfort zone

like

Thanks everyone who answered so far. This new person is great and so nice it’s just a tough project on a tough deadline and don’t want to see it fail. Could be too premature of a thought. I’ll continue helping her the best I can and be better about giving the credit, that’s a great idea

Hi all, looking for advice.

I'm a technical writer with background in the hardware and healthcare industry. What would be a better option for me, pivoting into software tech writing or project management.

Which one pays better/is better (any advice appreciated, must be fully remote role)

If software tech writing, does anyone have advice on how to break into a role or learn what it takes to become one?

For PM, I got a cert (not PMP) and am trying to decide which of these two I go with.

Hi All,
I am graduating with my MBA in December. I have 1 year experience as an internal business consultant, 3 years experience as a team manager with project management responsibilities and a background in Account Management and Sales prior to all that. I have been on the job hunt for months and haven’t been able to snag a single interview. I’m starting to feel pretty worthless. Does anyone have any suggestions for jobs or companies that may be interested in this type of experience?

One of the company asked if i could join as early as in 1.5/2 months where I have 3 months NP and haven't put papers yet .. i asked one of my senior in my team about this who's already resigning...and she has told about this to the entire team 😶. I realise it's my mistake asking her :p
Now that I'm not hearing back from the company which I gave interview and my environment at current project is a mess atm...Should I just put papers or bear with it till I fine another one..??

For the folks who do freelance work, do you do more consulting / advisory (get on the phone and talk) or project work (deliverable based work)? What are your thoughts on a platform that focuses on video-conference based advisory work - and not the bid on project type of work?

I am starting a new role with a new company and will have 6 direct reports. Although I have managed teams before in a consulting project setting, this will be the first time in industry. Any recommendations on how to sharpen my management skills (books, blogs, etc). Particularly looking at how to delegate effectively and practical examples on how to run day to day.

But... this is also true: "not everybody wants to be a leader" (whether they can or can't be). It is a fairly common practice in organizations with traditional career management structures for people to "be promoted" into leadership roles as the "end steps of the corporate ladder" that was climbed doing technical work. And, unfortunately, this doesn't work all the time

One of the reasons I want to transition from industry to consulting (tier 1) is that I get frustrated when I have to collaborate with mediocre people. My assumption is that Tier 1 consulting firms hire really sharp people and if I can get in, I’ll be collaborating with folks on top of their game (not expecting much from clients). I’m aware there are personal aspects I need to work on like my mindset, patience etc etc, but I just get so frustrated with blatant stupidity.
