I don’t understand why this is awkward. They want to advance, as should you. Consider helping them achieve their goals
why do you assume they want your job and not just your role? Perhaps wants to be a successor to your position assuming they are within Job Level and Accountabilities. They also could just want to be a Manager in a similar Business Line/Team
I wouldn't take it too seriously. Wanting to advance to your level doesn't mean they want to displace you. It's good to have someone around who wants to learn, that should be encouraged.
I don’t know if why people here are finding it awkward unless the reportee said they would have done your job better than you are.
You should ask them about their goals and support them in their journey. There are two ways for you to grow. 1. You start doing your boss’s job so your org gets an evidence of your capabilities 2. Your teammates start doing yours so you get promoted for scaling a rockstar team.
You teach them. I’ve told everyone on my staff that my goal is to not keep you in the same job forever. I have the same goal for myself. A good manager grows their team and leads by example. The minute they feel you’re holding back, they are going to leave and do your job somewhere else anyway. They aren’t a threat to you, but that perspective makes you one to them.
Lol awkward! I wonder if they were trying to say they would want a job like yours, or were they actually just saying they want your job? I wouldn't take it personally either but I would maybe give them a tip not to say that to their next manager because someone with a more fragile ego could get upset
I never take it as a sign that they are coming for my job but rather they want to learn how to do my job in case there is an opening either at our company or another. I have always been willing to train and teach people how to do my job if they are willing to learn.
