The risk and cost of coronavirus treatment is virtually zero for young and healthy individuals, even the unvaccinated. Probably makes more sense for them to charge their overweight employees, smokers, etc more rather than the unvaccinated.
It’s nice to see all the efforts focused on getting people vaccinated, but in the grand scheme of things getting people to lose weight would have much greater health impacts and would reduce overall healthcare spending.
In other words, let’s start discriminating against both the unvaccinated and fat people.

I actually agree with you; I think there should be more of a sliding scale or cost based on risk factors and behaviors. That includes choosing not to get vaccinated. But yea, also should include dietary choices, smoking, lack of exercise, etc.
When can we get a premium added for obese folks?
If you're over a certain BMI, you should be paying more for insurance as you're a burden on the health care system.
Pro
For all you people advocating for similar surcharges for obesity, smoking, drinking, etc. You're missing something. All those chronic conditions already financially disincentivize the people who have them. It costs money for diabetes testing supplies, prescription drugs, doctors visits, etc.
Before Delta did this, there was NO financial incentive to be vaccinated for most people who aren't vaccinated. They all think they won't end up in the ICU until they do. When they do, they hit their out of pocket max in one go and, if they survive, may have some ongoing costs from long COVID but are otherwise done. And those ICUs stays are incredibly expensive. Not the same as a chronic condition. At. All.
With this move, Delta is putting a financial incentive for people to be vaccinate to offset their potential costs from a completely unnecessary ICU stay.

I’m down for this as long as we price out the cost of all life choices on insurance. Let’s start with pricing across the BMI scale.
Bodybuilders and a lot of us who are in the gym multiple times a week are technically obese. BMI is a terrible indicator of health. Besides, pricing risk such as lifestyle choices, is pretty useless since I don't see a way that an insurance company would be able to validate lifestyle choices (drinking, smoking, not going to the gym, etc.)
Companies now able to take back wages from employees because they don’t like what they are doing. That’s an awful precedence
Lol I think Accenture pays you more if you drink.
I hope more companies consider this approach. Another way to have done this would have been to raise premiums by $200 for all and offer a discount to those that are vaccinated or that have a legitimate medical exemption.
Optics of giving a credit is always better than a surcharge.
This is what I see likely to happen for most organizations. Company premiums are likely to go up with the strains on healthcare system and they’ll offer discounts to premiums or other financial incentives such as HSA contributions for being vaccinated.
Many companies already offer financial incentives to employees that have blood work results in recommended range for glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides, etc. as well as BMI or waste size.
The ACA largely limited the ability to price differently so I wonder how this flies.
Another argument for Medicare for all!
EM1 you are correct. Self-insured companies can do what they want
Yes! This!

They already do. Accenture has a premium added on if you smoke.
I don’t support charging people based on their health or vax status. I would support burdening the unvacced with paying for COVID tests for events, dining out, etc.
Charging for predicting conditions is what we were trying to get away from. Not gonna be petty and wanting to go back to it.
The core difference being that in the vast majority of cases remaining unvaccinated is a choice these people have made whereas charging people based on possible future conditions is usually based on things outside those peoples’ control.

This is better than vaccine mandates, which I strongly object to. Think of it as a temporary $200 increase in health premiums that you can get a discount from.
I assume pretty soon insurance companies will stop paying for COVID stays considering the fact that COVID is now a preventable disease and we have an FDA approved vaccine.

Good
As others have pointed out insurance companies HAVE been charging premiums or refusing coverage based on weight in the U.S. as well as other lifestyle choices such as smoking. Experts have been saying that BMI is not a good predictor of health, rather social determinants for decades already. Lastly, 'fat' person won't get you killed by spreading a communicable disease inherent to their 'weight'. Pack up your ignorance and go back to work.

I wish PwC would add $250 premium per pay check for those unwilling
Smokers already have a surcharge on health insurance.
Many employers offer some sort of financial incentive if you exercise or lose weight.
And now, anti-vaxxers have to pay extra for the risk of being intubated for two weeks.
Welcome to the world of actuaries.
Let’s increase health insurance premiums for republicans too
Amazon 1, you can also go with Director 3 😊
Seems pretty reasonable.
This has been a topic in Group Health Care for some time. Group health care assumes things work out on average across the company's pool of employees, large numbers of unvaccinated folks will skew that assumption.
All sorts of similar things are in place today across firms from penalties for smokers, credits for people that sign up for lifestyle programs, etc. Lots of articles and papers on the topic that highlight benefits of these program changes and highlight concerns around privacy, slippery slope, etc.

This sounds like a lawsuit waiting to happen. There are still plenty of people who cannot get vaccinated for legitimate medical reasons. Limiting their leave and charging them more sounds like a DOT lawsuit waiting to happen. Just like their banning some service dogs based on breed which was ultimately overturned.
Self insured organizations simply have more flexibility when it comes to working with their payer. When it comes to Delta, my only suggestion was that as long as they aren’t skirting any specific laws they probably ask their insure to figure out what would happen if they could guarantee some things such as vaccination rates and could that change potential models for the actuaries who are underwriting the insurance.
I am not sure what ACA or legal framework Would prevent what they’re doing and quite frankly it’s Delta airlines, this isn’t a new concept, I imagine they already had a pretty good law firm take a look at this and say that they’re on pretty solid ground. You don’t announce a policy like that without going through the process
I also agree that it is a lawsuit waiting to happen simply because suing people is as American as apple pie. They have already been multiple vaccine lawsuits surrounding universities and employment stating that employers can mandate these things. I’m not sure what would prevent this specific allowance from happening. Walmart gave people $100 for getting the shot - this is a cost versus a benefit so that is treated differently.
Genius
Yet another reason to fly Delta.
Love it! Keep’em coming. Let the walls close in 🙌
