Growth mindset. Develop an appreciation for continual improvement. Therapy is for addressing the past. Coaching is for addressing the future.

Set goals and hold yourself accountable. Write down and put a plan together for how you want to grow. Develop goals and tackle them at a pace you can manage. Consistency matters.

Communication. Spend time honing presentation & storytelling skills. Find your personal voice. Practice in front of people. Practice in front of a camera, if that’s not an option. Prepare way more than you think you need to.

Business Fundamentals. Learn the basics of finance, accounting, operations, legal, marketing. The more senior you get, the more valuable these skills are. Perspective may open up opportunities for you to provide more value in your current role or pivot your career.

Learn to navigate conflict proactively. Conflict isn’t inherently bad. In fact, anytime you get a group a people together, there will always be some sort of team dynamics or conflict. The more senior you get, the more important this skill becomes.

Weed out toxic people, respectfully. Learn the difference between healthy, constructive conflict and unhealthy, destructive conflict. Some people are just not healthy to be around.

Counsel of Mentors. Build meaningful relationships that encourage growth. Personal growth happens at both sides of a mentor relationship. Be a mentor and mentee.

Read everything. Read for fun, for learning, for discovery. Figure out what you like and start there. Reading doesn’t have to be a chore.

You don’t know what you don’t know. No shame in asking questions. In fact you need to to grow! (didn’t meant to rhyme).

Not sure whether to be honest or not in this situation. I have decided that I want to leave my job and do a masters degree. I’m planning to leave my job at the end of June, should I warn my boss now so she can start hiring? I don’t want her to be blindsided by my decision and hiring is very slow at the moment. Plus if they hire someone I can train the transition will be easier? But I don’t want to shoot myself in the foot if they were thinking or giving me a pay rise or promoting me?

Throughout my career, I have worked at both “traditional” and “digital” shops. My current agency would fall under traditional but also offers digital services. Our process, roles and skillsets seem way outdated but I wasn’t sure if it was just my opinion or if this is just how it works. For example, we have no CTO or tech leads. Our digital producers feel more like project managers than actual producers. Account Management is just traditional, no real digital knowledge. Feels layered and dated.
