Post Mba hire. Say I exit in 1-2 yrs, what level do you think I’d get in industry? Director? Manager? Have 5 yrs industry exp as a marketing manager. Just shy of jr director before I left for school.

Depends on which consulting firm you are in and what industry you are working at. But my advice is that don’t take a manager level offer when you move to the industry. Wait until it’s a director level

like

Here are. Few thoughts:

1. You should focus on where you are and learn/do your best. Get the consulting projects that will be the most meaningful to your interests. Think about the details of exits in 2 years when the time comes. I fear fantasizing about them now will make you lose focus and just put in your time for the next couple years.

2. As you think about what would be meaningful for you, consider your industry exit interests, but also consider the macro economic climate will likely be mushy in a couple years. If you can find some hot skill areas or industries, go for those.

3. Start making friends in your target industry. Not because you want a job, but because you want to get to know them and learn more about the content area. Go to conferences, get on projects, write white papers.

Best of luck!

Great tips!! Thank you so much

Also depends on experience. MBA hire w 1-2 years of consulting & 0 industry experience is at maybe a manager level if you’re lucky. If you’re lucky

If you went directly from undergrad to graduate degree, you’re not offering much. You’d be around 25 & still considered a kid by industry standards

As mentioned in my post, worked for 5 yrs and left just before hitting jr director in industry. Was leading a team of 4 when I left and managing budget of 10M. Hoping I could get a director role when I chose to leave consulting but was curious what others have experienced as my “title” in consulting isn’t as high up as it was in industry. I’m 29

If you’ve never been a director, it’s hard to break into that level

I'm SVP/strategy for a PR agency. I moved into PR, Healthcare, and Strategic Planning only 3 years ago. An agency recruiter is trying to convince me to move into a GSVP account role, assuring me "at that level it's all strategy." (I dont think she understands the words she's using. Or that I'm qualified). But long-term, knowing account roles are so much more plentiful than brand planning in PR, I'm wondering if I should start thinking about account. Anyone here moved from strategy to account?
