Boundaries are critical. You must enforce your own boundaries, or they will take everything they can from you.
Block time as reoccurring private calendar invites before work for workouts, at lunch to take 30 mins away from your screen and, as much as you can, at least two nights of the week so you aren’t working late every night. Then enforce them. “I’m happy to do x ask at y time”; own your own destiny by controlling what you can control, and work with you manager to confirm what items are truly priorities and what items might just be shit they’re giving you bc you’re new and they may not realize your plate is already full. Also ask, as needed, for parameters on how much time they think these things should be taking; then you can level set that they aren’t allocating enough time, or have them agree to shift the ask to fit into their timeframe.
I did this fairly successfully at one agency.
And then, at another, I was told I ask too many questions, was difficult to work with, didn’t have a can-do attitude, and eventually got laid off.
Bright side is that I don’t regret holding my boundaries and am happy to have been laid off.
But I hate that toxicity in this industry is unpredictable and hidden everywhere.
Prior to this team, I was on a really healthy team that respected work/life balance and I worked with amazing clients. But just 8 days on my new team, I’ve experienced 3 mental breakdowns already and I’m relapsing very hard in my depression. I can hardly sleep anymore because I dread waking up the next morning, knowing I’ll probably work until 9 - 10pm again. I feel stuck and I want to quit.
I’ve been there. Not saying this is a factor, but for me, part of it was adjusting to the new situation after coming off of the high of being on a team you loved and a client/process you knew the ins and outs of.
I think for me I regretted it on day 2 or 3. What I can say is that once I got in the flow of everything and got to know people a lot of that changed and I ended up meeting people I’m still friends with and love.
What you’re feeling is understandable and given the added stress of the pandemic and all kinds of other shit it’s hard not to sink to a rough place.
Use your support system, talk about how you’re feeling with people close to you, and hang in there. It’ll get better. And if after a few weeks you’re done, there’s no shame in walking.
