Small firm owners need pov! Some good news after almost 11 months of applying and interviews and lots of rejections finally got an offer! In NYC small firm, ex big law folks, no billable hours, niche practice area, appearance of forwarded thinking firm, remote till who knows when, emphasis on pro bono initiatives and building book of business. The catch salary. Was making around 140k at last firm with 1800 billable. Offer is 85k and revist to bump to around 100k in several months after review

I’m a west coast associate. Small firm, 2 partners, 2 associates (myself included). No billable minimum also with a discretionary year end bonus. I started in April 2019 at 90k; just had my annual review last week. Was increased to 100k salary, doubled my monthly expense account, and a 5,000 bonus. I billed right at 1200 hours in 9 months. So, for me, I think it’s a fair compensation model for not having the 1800+ billable hour requirement. In my opinion, it comes down to compensation vs work life balance.

Thanks for the insight!

Cont. (plus discretionary bonus at year end). Seems like a place I could learn at and grow (practicing for close to 4 years in similar area). Am I fool for taking such a steep cut, given covid? Am I being lowballed? Is it better to revist salary convo in 4 months rather than bothering to negotiate small increase in offer to prevent bad taste in firm's mouth?

See I don't think I could live on that and would go solo before I took that but if you don't have any better options then go for it.

Have a big interview tomorrow. The question I dread the most is about why you’re looking for a new job. The honest answer is that there isn’t enough work to go around at my agency and I want to get ahead of the inevitable layoffs. What’s the best way to tell them this? Do I just make something else up entirely?

Have any of you taken "low bono" clients while working at a firm? I want to take on a low bono client or two but not sure who would get the money. This is a contract opportunity through a non profit so I'm assuming a 1099 will be issued. The per hour rate is significantly less than my billable rate. I would (obviously) like the money but my real objective is just getting experience/networking since I recently moved to a new state and don't have clients of my own.

What is everyone's Monday routine? Looking for ways to get things off to a good start with my team.

Have you seen women wear ties and "masculine"-looking suits to work? Was it accepted by client and team? I've never worn a tie to work, but when I've worn clothing that had a more "masculine" fit either in grad school or some work environments, I've gotten comments and looks, or sometimes asked (or people gossiped) about my orientation. When I wear more "feminine"-looking clothing, I feel more more uncomfortable and awkward. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Managing attorneys in small firms - how much do you make?

I'm in South Florida. Currently a 6 year associate at a small firm (~12 attorneys, 55 staff). Making a move towards Managing Attorney position that they are considering hiring from outside the firm for. I'm going to make the case that they should promote from within and give me the position. I'm objectively a good candidate for it. Question is... what's a good salary for that position? What do you make? Thanks.
