So after reading that PwC has the "given" the week of July 4th off in the newsletter, I looked at the FY20 US calendar, and it looks like we have to take 2 vacation/floating holidays

Why do people get so bent out of shape about having to use a floating holiday day, or *gasp* a vacation day? Not like any of us use all our vacation days. And there really is something to be said for everyone being off at the same time. Really cuts down on the chance of working over the holiday

likefunny

Maybe I’d rather take a different time off; that’s why!

like

PwC1 if you don’t use all your vacation days that’s your problem.

But for those of us who actually like taking vacation, I agree with OP that it’s annoying that the firm hands stuff like this to us like they’re bestowing a great favor when really they’re not giving out extra days off. It’s just a very not-as-advertised thing when you really think about it.

And RSM1 how are you coming on top? You literally have the same amount of days of whether they force you to use PTO or not if they’re not giving you extra vacation days.

Do I see a benefit to everyone taking time off at the same time? Yes. Do I feel like I need to drink that koolaid that mandatory vacation use is awesome? No.

likesmartfunny

yeah, I understand now! I was comparing my situation to yours, and i think you were comparing 3 days off for free to 5 days off using PTO. I totally agree with you, I’d rather have the 3 days free than 5 with PTO but i’d still prefer the 5 with PTO than only 1 day free that I used to get.

all perspective i suppose...

I'm fine with using the vacation (I would have taken the week off anyways) , I just keep getting annoyed at how the firms markets it like "we're doing this for you to help you plan". Give me a break. A couple extra paid days off though? That would have been nice (bc unlike some, I actually do use my vacation)

like

If I'm looking at it correctly, we actually have less days off (13 in FY20 vs 14 in fy19). So essentially we're patting ourselves on the back for letting people take time off that they would have taken anyways, lol. Figured the "great news" was just an attempt to boost morale

like

Outside of busy season dont tell me when i must take my vacation. Its just wrong. Yes there are some benefits but i earn the vacation days and i choosr when to utilize them

like

Is it irritating to be forced to use a day of PTO? Yes.
Are you still coming out on top? Absolutely.

My last firm only gave us one day off for the fourth. You may have to use a day or two but you’re still getting five.

Sometimes a little perspective helps.

like

I get annoyed bc I always use vacation time for travel, and flights are always more expensive around holidays/summer. So I end up having to pay double in airfare and get screwed.

like

^completely agree with both! I take 2 international trips a year and the extra costs really add up. However, I am thankful we get I think 2-3 extra vacation days at EY, which doesn’t sound like the case for PwC...

Total tax liability is around 400000. Any other options do I have to save tax further (other than HRA, LTA)? Thanks in advance.
