Average 401k balance by age below. You're likely to get some wild assertions on here since everything seems to believe they have millions banked and anything less is a failure.
Any idea on the median 401k balance?
Who told you what you should have by 38 and how do they make money? My car dealer tells me I need a new car. My roofer tells me I need a new roof. My wife tells me I’m fat..ok, this one is true.
Put away as much as you can in your 401k and Roth IRA - stretching to make it work. I promise you in 20 years, you will absolutely not regret it.
If you start now and commit, you’ll be ahead of ‘averages’ in no time and it will start to snowball.
You can contribute at least 4% to 6% your paycheck to get the company match at your 401K account first.
You need to make a transition to save as much as you possibly can. I wouldn’t worry about the should haves, outside of know you should have more and are playing catchup
