I put mine in a target date fund. They're not the best as the fees are higher than I would prefer, but my plan generally has lousy options and doesn't allow for self-directed investment (and even if it did I wouldn't have time to manage it.). Generally if your time horizon is long enough a good low-expense index fund like VOO or VTI or plan that invests similarly is a solid option. 401ks are generally money you don't want to put in high risk investments since they're your fallback. I maintain a separate account with some higher risk / higher reward type investments on top of mine to risk balance my portfolio.
I used to put it in a target date find. However, I didn’t feel the fees were worth it once I saw how little growth I was getting. So, I created a brokerage link within 401k and started investing on my own. I would highly recommend that if you aren’t happy with the funds that are offered within your 401k.
