Coach
In a similar boat (minus the weight gain) so I feel your pain. My work anxiety is affecting my sleep and appetite, which is the main cause of my struggle. I wish I had some helpful advice to give you but I'm trying to figure it out myself. Just know that you aren't alone. Sending you a big hug.

Stress is a huge component to weight gain. Body goes into fight or flight mode and thinks you need to conserve energy for later.
A few things I have learned using chat therapy (talkspace)
1) make sure your bloodwork is healthy. Vitamin D and sometimes your blood sugar can be big culprits
2) if you can’t work out, try to take a 10 minute to 30 minute walk outside daily. Just walk your normal pace. Between 20-30 minute mark, it helps your stress levels.
3) prioritize sleep. Try to get at least 8 hours of sleep during the week.
Other things you enjoy or do can be done on top of these.
A hot bath, a massage, talking with a counselor (like talkspace) coloring books, journaling, etc.
A 30second or longer hug can help as well. I hope you live close to family or have a friend that you are comfortable asking.
The easiest thing to do is to get outside get some sun, then some exercise, and then see a friend. These all sound like a lot bc you feel exhausted but your brain needs more happy chemicals. Here's a helpful graphic to help.
Long term is to get a routine of selfcare for you in. Whatever that entails. For me, I workout 5 times a week. Just for the mental stress release. Go for a drive on the weekends. And then force myself to walk to coffee shop every day even when I WFH to have human interaction outside of Zooms.

Honestly - I know your pain. I am a single mom. Was working 80 hours per week. They cut 2 people from my department, but the organization didn’t shrink in size and they had more compliance issues than they were aware of. I am an HR Director. I finally sought therapy because my anxiety was so bad (through BetterHelp). The problem is, right now it’s not like there are a lot of jobs out there and the job I was going to take for a 40k increase and nice bonus (and promise of normal work schedule) couldn’t hire me because of a non-compete. I finally went to the owner over this…he honestly didn’t even know this was happening…helped me draw my boundaries and got me some help (meaning employees) and I am working 40-50 hours like a normal salaried person. Sometimes, business owners don’t know everything that’s going on in a business.
I am right there with you. My job was the main driver of my stress and I just started a new one but now my stress is on first impressions!! I’m so exhausted by the weekends, I can’t manage to do anything else. I highly suggest therapy, I use BetterHelp and love it. The biggest thing I am putting in place is boundaries with work hours and commitments. I’m working on getting to bed at a decent time, giving myself extra time in bed where I’m not sleeping. I’m in the process now. Good luck to you!
Of course not!
Ive been in situations like this before and I would say FIND A NEW JOB! I work 3 days a week now 12hrs off 4 days where I focus on rest cleaning appts etc... I work out on my work days as soon as I get home everyday and on my off days I allow myself time to mentally and physically relax. Try getting a job at a hospital or a 12hr shift... U have to meditate and at least go for a walk. I too gained weight and the more you gain the less energy you will have.. I also take liquid vitamins from the Vitamin shoppe. U have to eat with a purpose more veggies n fruit and vitamins are a must! Remember stress causes heart attacks and strokes. Dont allow yourself to lose your life and sanity over a job. No job is worth that.. Been there done that learned after a 30 thousand dollar hospital bill and high blood pressure and meds that took my hair out...ITS NOT WORTH IT! Oh and drink tons of water every single day!
What is causing the stress? Is it because your organization is short staff in that particular department? Is the word too difficult for you to comprehend? What is it?
Find something to do at the weekends that brings you joy. Maybe see friends and family, even if just for a couple of hours, or go to the cinema or theatre to see a show. You need to have something to differentiate between work and social time. Sleeping and doing nothing else won't help.

Could you get a personal trainer? Accountability to get to the gym could help you tremendously, and a great trainer is like a therapist, hype team and workout support all in one.
Also what can you offload to give yourself less stress and give yourself more time on the weekends? Can you use a meal prep company to prep healthy meals for your week? Can you hire a house keeper even just for bi-weekly or once a month cleaning so you can enjoy your weekend and not spend it one chores.
Small steps to make yourself get back on track to being healthy will be your best bet. Reach out to friends on the weekend and schedule some time to do a hike/walk with a coffee so you’re active, outside and socializing. This routine can be a tough place to dig yourself out of but you’re aware of it so just take some small steps with some healthy choices. 🩷✨
I used to work in tech in a role that was very stressful and like you, I only had my weekends (sometimes). I agree with many of these responses including thinking about what you can offload on a personal basis.
On a professional basis though, did you take on too much? Can you delegate anything?
Do you have boundaries set such as no work for an hour at dinner time or no work past 8pm. If so, are you keeping to these boundaries or are you letting things sneak through?
Is this craziness indicative of the company and is it the right environment for you?
Just some things to think about:)
Force yourself to try different gyms, there are so many: boxing based, HITs in various firms, hot yoga, orange theory, or home based with online trainers.
How to break the cycle? Get up one day and try something.
Start with just walks, get outside, move, fresh air and vitamin D
Following. I’m experiencing the same thing and now my husband wants us to start trying for children. Like someone else said in a previous post, I’ve also started therapy and I’m learning to build boundaries at work and make time for self-care, even if I have to set alarms in my phone to remind myself. I recognize that I have a long way to go to establish a healthy work-life balance, but I’m trying to stay positive. We can do this!
Thanks! That’s really encouraging. Great idea.
