Every spare moment. Go over everything multiple times. Understand going into it that questions may seem to have multiple correct answers, and you need to provide the BEST correct answer. Think strategically. There’s a lot of gray area in the subject matter that you have to know how to navigate as an HR person.
Not trying to scare you but it was the hardest exam I ever took and the reason I won’t ever let my certification lapse. By the time I was on question 10, I was thinking about how I would study differently the next time. I was confident when I sat down, and I passed, but I was not confident once I got into it.
I used Quizlet and asked my supervisor about hypothetical situations that she might have encountered throughout her career and how they were/would be handled. Solid critical thinking and problem solving of HR situations are the skills you need to bring into the test.

I highly agree with quizlett. If you have capability to attend a prep class I would also suggest that.
I agree with Sr HRM - the SHRM Learning System was what helped me pass. Just keep reviewing and spend a little on some practice testing. Totally worth it!
Highly recommend the prep classes that are offered. Get the books, the flashcards, all the resources! Everyone absorbs information in different ways, so mix it up and use different tools. Carve out regular time to study. Treat it like a college course and stay disciplined with it.
Definitely get the study materials that SHRM provides, and use those practice exams! A good advice I received was “don’t take your own experience with you to the exam; use the knowledge from the reading materials.” Good luck!!
Also agree 100%, it's the SHRM answer.
Buy the expensive SHRM study materials and remember this is an SHRM exam. You have to put your SHRM hat on. SHRM’s way of HR is unfortunately nothing new or innovative, and it doesn’t matter how much HR experience/knowledge you have it doesn’t help you for SHRM certifications
I’m taking it on 6/24 and my quiz scores are barely at 80%, the “final prep exam” was a train wreck. I’m going over the quizzes again. And again. AND again. Good luck!!!
I took it about a week before. After quizzing for so long I needed new material and it set me up to “feel” like I was sitting for the real thing. Kinda calmed my nerves. It was worth it for me.
LinkedIn Learning also has a SHRM prep course list - I highly recommend this. And you get 1 month free if you haven’t signed up for LIL learning before! Otherwise it’s a nominal $29/month
If you are in Los Angeles (and maybe other major cities) you can access LinkedIn Learning for free with a public library card - https://www.lapl.org/linkedin-learning
Join the fb group for SHRM exam. There are some great teachers in that group.
The SHRM BoCK? I think it was called helped me a TON. I honestly just read that and memorized the definitions in that booklet they had for various HR terms we and those definitions saved me when it came to answering questions with the “SHRM” answer. I only used this free resource from SHRM and some practice tests and passed. Good luck!!!
Thanks everyone - I absolutely nailed that exam. So happy it’s over and I did so well!! Stress over!!
