Deloitte hands down. Kpmg is basically H&R Block

Culture will vary per office and team so hard to say. Not sure about compensation. Culture in my group (M&A tax) is great and that’s why I’m still with the firm.

What office?

I’m Deloitte Tax Southeast, been here 3 years. Had offers from both as a campus hire - my office visit w KPMG I got bad vibes/didn’t fit in with the culture, so I declined. It was my easiest cut. Then, I picked Deloitte (over one other B4 and 2 midsize) because all of the people I met throughout recruiting really seemed to care and I vibed with the office on my visit. The comp is roughly the same at every B4 starting out. For this next part, obviously we’re all overworked and underpaid in PA, but try to put $ to the side when making the decision- this is your career and you need to find a place where you will be happy with the people you spend your life with (you’ll spend more time with coworkers than your family, so make sure you vibe with them) . The work, like the pay, is generally the same. It really does come down to where you fit best. I turned away higher starting comp because I knew I liked the people better at Deloitte, and to this day, I can say I work with some awesome people who are now my friends. Does it mean I don’t hate my life and career choice sometimes? No, but it helps to have friends at work. Best of luck!

Kpmg was ass at least their salt group anyway

Felt like a high school - very clicky. SMS and Directors acted “nice” but they gave 0 shits about your well being idk

KPMG’s comp is kibbles and bits.

It’d be helpful if you could mention which service line/groups specifically influenced your opinion

Also Deloitte software is light years better than kpmg.

Piggybacking off this - which big 4 has the best tax accounting (ASC 740) group, specifically in the northeast.

EY1 - from experience, it’s not PwC,

Any advice for negotiation? I made the mistake of letting slip my current salary to the recruiter and now I’m in final rounds at FB and the recruiter disclosed the salary for the position. It seems to be quite below industry average based on Glassdoor and other sources, but I know once given the salary it’s hard to negotiate at FB. I recently got a title change at my current company, and possible salary increase, so I was thinking of using that to counter. Never negotiated before!

Why does everyone put Tech / FAANG on such a pedestal, claiming it’s better than MBB. Sure, the comp and WLB may be better, but you won’t be doing as meaningful and impactful work e.g. Govt Covid response, Gates foundation projects, industry defining projects in the space of a few months etc
