Generally speaking, role changes don't happen unscheduled, so you'll probably have to wait until your evaluation rolls around. When that happens, be prepared to make a good case for yourself. Be able to point to specific examples where you've grown in the job. And make the point that while you've grown in your role, the role should grow also. In the meantime, just be careful about taking on tasks that don't really fit into your career strategy. You don't want to get overstretched with things that take you off-track.
I ended up leaving a company over this. Long story short, I took on way too much and they just kept stringing me along with promises of promotion. Ended up leaving for the title change I wanted. Definitely be mindful of the extra work and make sure that others are aware of it too.
Make sure your leader understands everything that you’re working on. If the work is coming from your manager, they may not understand how much they’ve impacted you with additional work. The next time they bring something after you’ve had the conversation of everything that you’re doing, ask them which task they would like to Put towards the bottom on prioritize, because this new task will need to be prioritized. Ask, who else you can give the prioritized work to. This will help you help them understand how their impacting you. And then be sure to document all the extra things that you’re doing and what your role should be making. That way when time comes, you can ask for a dollar amount and have the work to back you up.
Been there. I started by framing it as, “Here’s what I’m already doing and how it’s impacting the team—can we talk about aligning my role and compensation?” It helped to tie it to business value, not just effort.
I love the statement combined, “can we talk about aligning my role and my compensation“! That is excellent!
I will definitely be stealing this. But, of course, giving you the credit. 🙂
Slowly back away from volunteering your helpfulness and stick to what you were hired to do. Seems you have volunteered yourself onto extra stuff. Don't do that to yourself.
