Downtown is a mess still. (Because nobody is really working there from what I’ve seen). Did you grow up here? Then maybe you won’t be as shell shocked. But I’ve been back for 12 years now and while the food and music scene has gotten considerably better, the outdoor escapes are now packed and the traffic is pretty bad. Don’t get me wrong, I still love the town. But I do wonder if there are any places left like the old Portland of the early 2000s. Oh, and btw, there are, on average, 25 people going for every job.
It really depends on what neighborhood you’re in. I’m in Brooklyn/Sellwood (right on the border) and it’s pretty quiet with some occasional incidents. Car thefts are rampant but that seems to be an issue in most major cities these days. If you steer clear of downtown and stay west of SE 82nd it’s pretty much the same as it has been for the last 10 years or so.
Thanks yall!! Super helpful. I was home last month and Pearl/slabtown seemed pretty cleaned up. My parents are just above NW so anything SE feels too far and too far NE feels too residential but I just don’t know the areas as well!
Honestly, I don’t see a lot that your don’t see in another large city.
I moved here from Phoenix, where I lived centrally. In Phoenix there was an alley behind my apartment where some homeless people used drugs and also left their poop.
Here, I live in the suburbs and go into the city occasionally. It feels very comparable to what the above person said, within the city it varies pocket to pocket. There are also plenty of suburbs that are nice.
All in pockets. It really has changed a lot, though. There are pockets of new developments. There are pockets of very unfortunate situations that have no one-and-done solutions. It all depends on what part of town you go and what specific streets you're on.
You can always move to the other side of the bridge, Washington side (Vancouver, Camas). I live in Camas and have helped people made that move. I am a realtor and support my clients with my giving back program which covers a significant portion of their closing cost. Dm me if want to chat.
Don’t leave me.
