Bill 45 to stay alive
I got promoted to senior with 84 adjusted, and a decent ("3") rating first year with just 60%
Nice to hear that's possible. It's my first year with the firm and I'm quickly realizing transitioning between projects can easily rack up a few weeks of bench time. Gotta be careful who you lock yourself up with next...
If you're just short of util goals but everything else is on target you'll be fine. Aside from promotion years
True. It's all a crap shoot - so might as well not kill yourself to hit a high util and take bad projects for it (if you even have a choice...). Getting the high rating is in your control at least.... Plus first year doesn't matter
Just short meaning 85?
Don't stress in first year. Focus on getting on the best projects possible and doing well on them... and learning stuff. Plus bench time is fun.
D1 your original post made it sound like you got promoted on a y/e 3. Which is certainly possible, though pretty rare. You can get promoted on utilization below target, as long as it's within reason. Not that there's a hard cut-off, but I think more than 10-15% below target would start to get dicey.
Sorry - meant to say that first year I got a 3 with just 60% util. I think we all agree util is an important metric. I'm just trying to drive home the point that first years shouldn't get nervous and lose the drive to explore and/or get overworked just to meet a metric which is likely less important than performance and developing skills (and impressing the right people 😜)
Utilization for first years means nothing though. Got a 2 with a <60% utilization my first year
Known a few that have been promoted while not making target. You just need a good story on why you haven't, where you hanging on the beach for the fun of it or where doing XYZ. If your in your first year it doesn't matter, as long as you are being proactive about finding ways to be useful.
Apparently YMMV depending on your service line, peer group, who's speaking up for you at consensus meetings, etc. That said, I hear it's rare to get promoted without a 2 overall rating and hitting your utilization target...
Any differences in how Federal and Commercial consultants are evaluated?Technically the targets are agnostic but I imagine there are leniences one way or the other
Hey D1 85% was ok for you? I have heard that you have to pass 90 for sure if it's your promotion year..
I don't even understand the point of your question... Yes. I'm not lying. I had amazing feedback for 4 engagements on projects inside and outside my MO and told the story they want to hear (blah blah blah built technical competencies and soft skills.) Got a year end 2 as I requested and high salary increase. Utilization is important and all... But if you can account for what you've been doing all year and can show you're good and they need you to move up - you will get it
^ didn't mean to say you were lying. Just heard too many people talking about hitting more than the utilization goal for a sure promotion 😒
Ah, makes sense. And yes, amen to that!
Do good work, find a team that'll bat for you, and make it hard for everyone else to doubt that you deserve whatever rating you want. Promo to Senior with a '1' with 75% util, 85ish adjusted.
D6 explain more how you did that? Even with the higher adjusted util, getting a 1 with 75% utilization seems crazy? Not doubting just honestly curious
