Yes, I have considered going into policing. I believe that the training and experience from being a correctional officer and working within the criminal justice system provide invaluable knowledge to those in law enforcement. From my work with inmates, I understand the psychology of criminals, which allows me to contribute insights into investigations.
Being a c.o before becoming a police officer gives you insight into the criminal mind. Inside, you see their interactions and what’s important to them and helps to diffuse situations before they start.
I am already familiar with the legal framework of criminal proceedings, so working in law enforcement would not be unfamiliar territory. Though, I decided to stay in corrections because it’s a job I feel passionate about and enjoy doing.
It’s gratifying to help inmates turn their lives around and see them go on to lead successful lives outside of prison. Correctional officers have a unique role in ensuring that prisons are safe places for both inmates and staff alike; knowing that we can make an impact to improve safety is something that really resonates with me.
I have considered going the policing route in the past, and it was because I wanted to expand my knowledge and experience in law enforcement.
I can develop specialized skills such as crisis intervention, communication, de-escalation tactics, and conflict resolution, which are essential for working in corrections. Overall, I believe that my current career choice has enabled me to build lasting relationships with those I serve while ensuring public safety.
Yes, I have considered going into law enforcement. I was drawn to the idea of serving my local community and doing my part to uphold the law. Ultimately, though, I chose to stay in corrections because I wanted to make a difference in people’s lives and help rehabilitate those who have broken the law.
The work can be difficult, but it is also gratifying. I appreciate the camaraderie and team spirit that comes from working with other correctional officers. It really helps to keep us motivated and creates an environment where we can do our jobs effectively.
I have considered it. But I happen to love being a corrections officer. There is a lot one can do to make inmates lives a bit better. It's a good feeling. And if there is at least one thing I can say about inmates that surprised me, they have a good sense of humor. Also, they seem more satisfied, in a better mood overall than we, officers are.
Started corrections in 2014. Plan to leave law enforcement at year 10. I learned so much and will be forever grateful.
This is so inspiring. I will be in my 3rd year this year. Hoping to learn more :)
A lot of my friends are considering this switch. I don't know what prompted them. But maybe they want to take on new challenges.
