In what context was he swearing? Like, was it to support an emotion….did something cool in a video game and said “oh fuck yea!” Or did he use it as an adjective at someone…”fuck you, you piece of shit”? My personal philosophy is the only one that deserves consequences is the latter.
It was the latter. He lost his temper.
He is an amazingly empathetic and selfless kid. Loves everyone. Is held up as a model kid at school, and we are very proud of him. So this is definitely an outlier. How the heck do we get the message across that this behavior, however rare, is unacceptable?
I would first communicate the issue and not necessarily say it’s “wrong” but more-so that there is a time and place for words like that. Kids will always be swearing when their parents aren’t around, so just remind him that although you know you can’t stop him from saying it, just be cautious of where he is saying it and in front of who.
Punishment is fine, if he doesn’t mind being that way then that’s a good thing. Just because a child doesn’t repent doesn’t mean you need to punish them until they do. If this situation occurs again, then up the punishment and slowly take away everything and kick him out the house with a suitcase 😈 my mother use to say she was gonna call CPS lol
He ultimately came and said he immediately felt bad but didn’t want to apologize then and there. Honestly it’s been an awesome experience with him off electronics- it’s like he’s an even more awesome kid than he was before.
He’s now saying he has been enjoying this so much he is ok staying off electronics for a bit. I don’t know how much prouder I can be of this kid.
Kids swear all the time when their parents aren't around. Have a talk with him about there being a time and place for language like that. Even if he honestly doesn't mind his punishment, he probably does understand.
