TW: This past year has been rough, ended a long relationship, started and stopped therapy cause insurance didn’t cover, been trying to change jobs and settling visa issues all at once. These past few months, I’ve only been able to fall asleep at 5/6am, been losing weight and started self harming again. I feel like I really need a break but how do I bring this up when I don’t have much PTO left? Sorry for unloading, would just love some advice right now

This is too much for anyone to have to handle on their own. You need a break. If there’s anything you can start to downsize so you can afford an extended rest without PTO now is the time. Ask for help. Start with one healthy habit at a time (like no drinking, or no phones in the bed) to kick start this path towards healing. And I strongly recommend listening to affirmations and guided meditation to calm your nervous system. Does any of this resonate?

Check into sliding scale therapists too. I was able to work out a $50 per session no insurance involved deal.

I’m sure you’ve been told before, but it really does get better. It’ll always come in waves for people who struggle with depression, but you won’t be stuck in this place forever.

Have you asked about policy for health leaves at your company? Most companies do offer something like this.

Are there? I wasn’t sure about it but my company is also under WPP, I’ll ask about it thank you!

Do you have any sick days?

If you can get a doctors note stating that you need days of leave “to heal an injury” (in this case your brain and heart) that may help.

My firm has applied for my L1A visa. My last therapist keeps coming up in my mind. I left her when I moved to a new area before COVID dug in and frankly it felt like leaving a girlfriend. She also disclosed in the final session that she was a member of AA and knew several of the people I occasionally discussed from the rooms.
