Good luck! Don't be afraid to talk to your doctor about switching if it's giving you side effects or just not working that well. I switched off my first one because it was causing some other issues, and it's been smooth (well, ish, lol) sailing since then
Good luck!! I was on Zoloft for 2 years and it soooo helped curb my anxiety. However, it made me an exhausted slug. I didn’t realize it until I stopped taking it. Make sure to constantly evaluate yourself for changes so you’re aware of its impact for good and bad!
EXACT SAME SCENARIO except I had to take myself off of it - my doc and I never really had this convo. Still learning better reactions but so grateful to have my drive back. I missed it.
Also congrats on caring about your mental health! 💯💯💯💯
Add changes to your diet and exercise more!
I’m sorry to hear that those changes didn’t work. I’ve seen people be put in SSRIs and I always advocate for a multi-modal approach to depression. This includes more vacations(if possible), taking time off, gym routines, fish oil, following thru on some of your hobbies/passions, and at times, just caring less(if work is one of the major stressing factors).
Good luck. Make sure you talk to your doc about side effects you may notice. It can be helpful to keep a log.
Also, never ever ever quit cold turkey. Always talk to your doctor and taper slowly
Finally, don’t expect this alone to solve all of your problems. Diet, exercise, and other practices also help!
Congrats on taking this step forward! It’s not easy, but absolutely worth it
C2, great call out on the taper!
Genomind does genetic testing for $200 and can give you information about which antidepressant drug classes are more or less likely to work for you. We found I had a genetic mutation where SSRIs wouldn’t work for me and I would need higher levels of SNRIs. Saved months to years cycling thru different options to find what works.
Hope you’re feeling better soon and if you find you’re not, consider genetic testing.
Congrats on getting help. If Zoloft doesn’t help, lexapro works wonders for me with little/no side effect
Definitely recommend the Genomind or Genesight testing, and definitely consider pushing lifestyle changes like trying to force exercise, diet, and what not first if possible. Exercise alone has been shown to be in many cases just as effective as SSRIs and you avoid the constellation of side effects you may / likely will have to deal with from meds.
This is coming from someone who has tried multiple SSRIs over the years for multiple years at a time that have, more than anything else, screwed up some really important aspects of my life and personality. SSRIs are totally necessary in some cases, but psychiatry is still in its infancy and SSRIs are a shotgun approach. Just some unsolicited advice but something I wish I had heard before going down this long road of meds. Take it as you wish! Message me if you’d like to chat further. I can also talk about impact of other more novel forms of treatment such as Ketamine / Entheogens that for me, solved some of my mental health issues basically overnight, without need for continuing long term medication use.
For example regarding exercise, see meta-study: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3674785/
Edit: Looks like you have tried lifestyle changes. Leaving post as is for anyone else in case helpful, but reach out if you’re curious about the novel treatment approaches I’ve undertaken!
Just wanted to give something more than a like to your post. I did a trial of a ketamine derivative as an anti-depressant, and it seemed to wear off after about two weeks, like they expected; that's awesome that it worked so well for you
Good luck!
Good luck! Hope this helps.
Mushrooms work best for me
Luck & patience. It’ll take at least a couple weeks to ramp up. Take it easy while you’re waiting.
Prompted by some of these top level posts, I want to add that I think a big thing with my anti-depressants is not that they make me feel amazing, but they sort of raise the floor enough to let you help yourself. That's probably the most important part. Whether it's exercise or eating better or drinking less or a hobby, you need to keep trying to work on your own (with the help of a therapist if you can find a good one/afford it). I'll second @SA1 if you need or want someone to talk to (for all y'all, not just OP, if anyone else is reading this and struggling)
Which one?
Zoloft
Started taking Prozac for anxiety. Felt great, but I felt that I always was too chill about things like work and lost brain power in exchange for peace of mind.
